By Jennifer P. Gaitano

BUTUAN CITY -- In time with the National Nutrition Month celebration, various sectors in Caraga region have intensified the government’s campaign against malnutrition, importance of breastfeeding, and the implementation of Executive Order 51 or the Milk Code of the Philippines.

The National Nutrition Council (NNC) Caraga together with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Philippines took the lead in the conduct of a forum in Butuan City.

Dr. Niรฑo Archie Labordo,  Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator of NNC-Caraga, highlighted the relevance of breastfeeding not only to mothers, but more so with the different sectors along with the government agencies that provide various programs and services which contribute to the well-being and good nutrition of the children sector.

"It is important not only for government agencies that provide services and programs to the sectors, but most importantly for parents and mothers, how important breastfeeding if for their babies and the nutrients it provides. That's why we continue to advocate for breastfeeding to ensure that our children get the right nutrition that will also ensure prevent them from different diseases," said Dr. Labordo.

There are a lot of advantages for breastfed babies especially during the 1000 days of life. It gives the babies the right nutrients that prevents them from easily getting sick, and makes them healthier,” shared Kristine Angelie Gimongala, Nutrition Cluster Coordinator, UNICEF Philippines.

The said activity has gained positive feedback as participating sectors expressed their commitment to support the campaign by helping the government in promoting good nutrition and breastfeeding to babies especially in the first 1000 days of life.

They also expressed support for the policies and ordinances that ensure provision of programs and services to the vulnerable sectors during emergencies or disasters.

“As a mother, I care so much about the welfare of my baby that’s why I personally took this opportunity to learn more how I could provide good and proper nutrition of my baby through this forum by the NNC-Caraga,” said Earlie Jul Fajardo of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Caraga.

“If we want to achieve our common goal in achieving proper nutrition to our children and babies, we have to be serious in our campaign against malnutrition and instill the importance of breastfeeding for our children to have healthy life,” shared April Love Oja of Father Saturnino Urios University (FSUU) in Butuan City.

Philippine Army, DepEd Launch Literacy Program for IP Soldiers and Former Rebels

BUENAVISTA, Agusan del Norte – Fifteen Enlisted Personnel under the 23rd Infantry (Masigasig) Battalion (23IB) who are members of the Indigenous Peoples (IP) and 38 Former Rebels (FRs) graduated from the Alternative Learning System (ALS) Program facilitated by the Department of Education Division of Butuan City on July 26, 2022 in Butuan City.

The Army ALS learners, composed of Indigenous Peoples (IP), were enlisted into the regular force through Special Enlistment as part of the government’s support to IP who are most vulnerable to the Communist Terrorist Group's (CTG) recruitment and exploitation.

Majority of the recruited members of the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) were not able to finish their studies, making them very vulnerable to radicalization and violent extremism. The CTG exploits those people who lack education especially in far flung areas convincing them to join the New People's Army since it would not be very  difficult for them to raise issues and propaganda to influence, convince and organize them against the government.

Dako among pagpasalamat sa gobyerno nga gintagaan mi ug chance nga masugod ug bag-ong panginabuhi (For how many years serving the NPAs, they destroyed our future, they are the reason why I did not finish my studies. I am thankful to the government for giving us chance to start a new life," said Inday Binongkasan, who is the oldest graduate at 54.

The ALS Program was introduced to FRs at the Masigasig Happy Homes as part of their preparation before going back to their community, knowing that the main reason  for their recruitment  by the NPA is their lack of education.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey P Balingao, the newly installed Commanding Officer of 23IB congratulated the IP Soldiers and FRs for completing the ALS- DepEd program. He said, “we are happy that our soldiers and FRs hurdled the process of undergoing the program that will be to their best interest in continuing their military service and serves as their accomplishment. We also laud the efforts of the ALS teachers who patiently taught them and helped them complete the program. More than anything else, it’s their sacrifices that realized the success of our soldiers and FRs on this momentous day."

After having successfully completed this program, all they can think of is to move forward and become productive and responsible  citizens. Many years ago, most of these graduates were in the dark and holding weapons,  but now they are holding their graduation certificates onward to a better and brighter beginning.

Despite this feat achieved by the government, the 23IB will unceasingly pursue the remaining members of the communist groups who are hiding in the hinterland boundaries of the province, in the interest of peace and justice to our nation.

(JPG/PIA-Caraga)

Cabadbaran City’s Veggie Techno Demo Farm unveiled

BUUTAN CITY -- Three months after its kick-off, the Local Government Unit of Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte through its City Agriculture Office, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture - Caraga High-Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) and private seed companies, culminates the Vegetable Production Technology Expo through a field day and harvest festival at Panlaisan, Cabadbaran City, on Monday.

The one (1) hectare techno-demo farm established last April, aims to showcase the potential area of vegetable production in the city, whilst utilizing a previously irrigated 270-hectare area under the Pandanon Irrigation System that has been dried up for many years.

Cabadbaran City Agriculturist Maria Arceli Soria said that the techno-demo farm serves as a show window to test the viability of the space, given its soil condition before introducing it to interested vegetable growers for the expansion of the city's vegetable production.

Cabadbaran City Mayor Judy Chin-Amante also eyes the area as a potential site for veggie mass production given that the business investment in the city is expanding.

"With the entry of a big shopping mall in the city, this is a challenge to our local farmers to produce more so we could provide them with the supply of food they need," Mayor Chin-Amante said.

Regional Technical Director Rebecca R. Atega also lauds the effort of LGU Cabadbaran in prioritizing the needs of the local farmers in terms of market linkage, thus, one way to strengthen this is by clustering approach.

"We appreciate the forward-looking of our LGU Cabadbaran, what we can provide now is to cluster all of these associations so we could have an orderly system from production to processing up onto the marketing and Kadiwa," RTD Atega said.

Jose Ian Delacruz and Stephen Dy, the farmer-cooperators of the land said that the demo farm helps their fellow vegetable growers to have options in planting.

“From the technologies offered by the participating seed companies, this could maximize our vegetable production since they can already identify what’s viable and suitable to plant. Hence, this could also boost our local production since most of our high-value crops are from Northern Mindanao and Davao region,” they said.

Marilyn Baron, President of the Cabadbaran City Vegetable Growers Association (CCVEGA), is grateful to the Department of Agriculture for setting up the initiative for them to apply what they have gathered from the site to their farms.

“We were amazed by the performance of other varieties of seeds which we think could produce a higher yield. The higher the yield, the higher the income for our association,” Baron said.

Around 250 participants from different farmers' cooperatives and associations (FCA) in Cabadbaran City including Barangay Agriculture Workers and Barangay Agriculture and Fisheries Para-Technicians attended the field day.

Seed Companies also set up their booths showcasing their products using their varieties from the farms. Ramgo International Corporation, Pilipinas KANEKO Seeds, East-West Seeds Co. Incorporated, Seedworks Philippines Incorporated, and Allied Botanical Corporation participated in this activity. Meanwhile, SYNGENTA Philippines Inc., YARA International, and BacPhil Planters Corporation participate in the showcase of fertilizers and chemicals.

Moreover, RTD Atega together with the Officials of the LGU Cabadbaran also recognizes the efforts of the participating farmer-cooperators and private seed companies through an awarding ceremony. (Kent Warren H. Fugoso, DA-13 RAFIS, PIA Agusan del Norte)
