DepEd Dinagat Islands, partners hold AIDS candlelight memorial

DINAGAT ISLANDS — The Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division of Dinagat Islands, in collaboration with the provincial government of Dinagat Islands and the Provincial Health Office, gathered the division personnel and other stakeholders on May 29 for a meaningful commemoration of the 2025 AIDS Candlelight Memorial, honoring those who lost their lives to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) and intensifying the fight against HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) stigma and discrimination.

Held at the Dinagat School of Fisheries ICT Laboratory, the event with the theme, “Alalahanin ang nakaraan, ipaglaban ang karapatan: Sama-samang pagbangon sa mga pinagdaanang pagsubok tungo sa pagkakapantay-pantay (Remember the past, fight for rights: Rising together from adversities toward equality)," underscored the importance of remembrance, advocacy, and collective action to ensure a more inclusive and health-affirming society.

DepEd Dinagat Islands Administrative Officer V Marvin P. Ebueza and Provincial Population Officer Lucio P. Mercado emphasized the significance of the gathering in building awareness among educators, learners, and community members, noting that HIV and AIDS education is crucial in developing informed and compassionate youth leaders.

Through the School Head and Nutrition Section (SHNS), headed by Dr. Donna Lyn Celeste, medical officer III, the activity formed part of the ongoing commitment of DepEd Dinagat Islands, under the leadership of Schools Division Superintendent Florence E. Almaden, to champion youth health and well-being. The Division remains steadfast in ensuring that schools serve as safe spaces for advocacy and empowerment.

As the 2025 AIDS Candlelight Memorial came to a close, participants pledged to continue their work in combating stigma, spreading accurate information, and supporting those affected by HIV — a commitment that reaffirms education’s critical role in advancing public health and social justice.
