‘Chic point:’ Dinagat Islands police hand out lipstick at COMELEC checkpoint

By Renelle Luzon Escuadro

BUTUAN CITY - Dinagat Islands’ police officers distributed free lipstick at a COMELEC checkpoint in Brgy. Justiniana, San Jose, on March 1, an initiative aimed at celebrating National Women’s Month.

The Dinagat Islands Provincial Police Office (DIPPO) spearheaded the effort to promote inclusive participation in the celebration and to remind women of its significance, said Maj. Dores T. Aguhob, acting chief of DIPPO’s Provincial Plans and Programs Unit.

“Our policewomen gave lipstick to some of the women they encountered at checkpoint areas. This is a gesture supporting and empowering them, celebrating our strength, and acknowledging our unique contributions in society, especially during this month dedicated to all women,” Aguhob said.

Cherry Mae, a San Jose resident, expressed surprise and appreciation after receiving lipstick at the checkpoint.

“Honestly, as a housewife with many daily chores, I wasn’t mindful of the celebration, so I was amazed,” she said. “Thank you to our police officers for reminding me of my value as a woman and that I have to take care and love myself. Thank you for this lipstick; I will use it to keep me beautiful.”

Meanwhile, the Caraga Regional Gender and Development Committee (RGADC), partners and stakeholders kicked off the National Women’s Month with a motorcade, opening program and a “Kapihan sa PIA” forum on March 3 in Butuan City.

All provinces in the region also held opening events and scheduled activities to raise public awareness and participation in the celebration.

The Philippine Commission on Women said the 2023-2028 campaign banner, “WE for Gender Equality and an Inclusive Society,” is in its third year. “It serves as both a positive affirmation and a call to action to renew the commitment to advocacy,” the commission said.

The celebration’s sub-theme is “Babae sa Lahat ng Sektor, Aangat ang Bukas sa Bagong Pilipinas” (Women in All Sectors, the Future Will Rise in the New Philippines).  (RLE, PIA Dinagat Islands)
