PMO Surigao, partners collect 270 kg of waste in quarterly clean-up

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte -- The Port Management Office (PMO) of Surigao demonstrated its commitment to the environment by conducting its 4th quarter coastal and street cleanup, despite challenging weather conditions on November 16.

The activity, which focused on the port areas along Borromeo Street in Barangay Taft, brought together a diverse coalition of maritime stakeholders and community partners.

Despite pre-dawn rains, participants showed up in force to contribute to the environmental initiative. The Terminal Management Office (TMO) of Lipata also conducted its own cleanup activity at areas under its jurisdiction.

"This quarterly activity reflected our ongoing dedication to maintaining the cleanliness and environmental integrity of our port facilities," said Froilan Caturla, port manager of PMO Surigao.

The cleanup effort saw participation from eight major shipping lines operating in the region, including Starlite Ferries, Ocean Fast Ferries, Archipelago Philippine Ferries Corporation, Claire Edith Sea Transport, Zac Greggor, Romans Road Shipping Lines, JP Shipping Lines, and Vince Gabriel Liners.

Supporting agencies and organizations that joined the initiative included Vertex Maritime International Trading Inc, D' New Surigao Porters Association Inc., the 72nd Naval Group Reserve, Surigao Seaport Vanguard Eagles Club, Globalport Surigao Terminals, Inc., PPA-Surigao Employees Services Cooperative.

The collaborative effort yielded significant results, with teams collecting 27 sacks of mixed waste, weighing approximately 270 kilograms. The collected waste, consisting of both biodegradable and residual materials, was properly disposed of following environmental guidelines.

This initiative is part of PMO Surigao's broader environmental management program, which aims to maintain the cleanliness of port facilities while promoting environmental awareness among port users and stakeholders. (PMO Surigao/ PIA-Surigao del Norte)
