PMO Surigao, Surigao City team up for ‘Build-A-Reef Project’

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte -- Heeding to the call of the city government of Surigao for volunteer agencies and organizations to assist in the rehabilitation of coral reefs within the locality’s coastal waters, the Philippine Ports Authority - Port Management Office ((PPA-PMO) Surigao recently spearheaded the installation of artificial coral reefs in Surigao City boulevard marine sanctuary.

The said marine sanctuary which has been earlier designated by the local government unit as coral reef preservation area to be a haven of different marine species.

As recent studies showed that the coral reefs in our country are on the decline due to climate change and other factors, these artificial reef cones are designed for corals to regenerate and fish to thrive.

This worthy endeavor is also aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) particularly SDG No. 11 “Sustainable Cities and Communities”, SDG No. 13 “Protect the Planet”, and SDG No. 14 “Life Below Water” which focuses on the sustainable use and conservation of marine resources.

Also, the said activity is consistent with UN SDG No. 17 which is “Partnerships for the Goals” since it is done in collaboration with the Surigao City Environment and Natural Resources Office (City-ENRO), City Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Office (CDRRMO), the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), the 72nd Naval Group Reserve, the Surigao Seaport Vanguard Eagles Club, and the Surigao Harbor Pilots Association.
