DPWH-13 inaugurates evacuation center in Cagwait, Surigao Sur

CAGWAIT, Surigao del Sur – Residents from the 11 barangays of Cagwait, Surigao del Sur will soon benefit from the modern multi-purpose evacuation center, with its recent turnover to the local government of Cagwait by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Caraga on October 10.

The facility reflected the government’s commitment to building resilient communities, balancing disaster preparedness with spaces for social activities and community development. With its modern amenities and strategic design, it will support evacuation efforts during emergencies. More than just refuge during disasters, it also enhances public service delivery as a venue for sports, recreational activities, and public events during normal times.

Designed to function as a safe haven during natural disasters, the facility covers 1,250 square meters (50m x 29m) and boasts a range of essential amenities to support evacuees and community activities, including:

· separate male and female toilets and baths

· clinic, prayer room, and dressing room

· kitchen, mess hall, and laundry facilities

· reception area, storage space, and administrative office

· basketball court with bleachers, and

· breastfeeding and playroom for mothers and children

According to DPWH, the project was funded under regular infrastructure for fiscal year 2024 with a total cost of P32,152,632.41 that began on December 5, 2022, and construction completion on June 5, 2024.

The turnover was also attended by Project Engineer Jaime J. Uriarte, Engineer Irewil D.
