Bayugan City’s barangay nutrition committees formulate nutrition action plans
BAYUGAN CITY, Agusan del Sur – The local nutrition committees (LNCs) of Bayugan City took a significant step toward enhancing local nutrition action plans by actively participating in the recently held Local Nutrition Action Planning Workshop, at the Department of Agriculture (DA) Building of this city.
The event brought together some 39 dedicated participants, including six punong barangays, 18 barangay nutrition scholars (BNS), six barangay secretaries, five Department of Health (DOH) nurses and midwives, and three Kagawad on Health, all representing the city’s top-performing barangays in nutrition initiatives namely, OsmeΓ±a, Maygatasan, Salvacion, Bucac, Mt. Olive, and Mt. Carmel.
Bayugan City Mayor Kirk A. Asis and also the chairperson of the City Nutrition Committee attended the training and delivered his inspiring welcome remarks, setting a positive tone for the 3-day workshop.
The first day of the training featured informative discussions led by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) Caraga. Jesa Alngog, nutrition officer (NO) II of NNC Caraga, provided an overview of the workshop, while Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator (RNPC), Dr. NiΓ±o Archie S. Labordo, discussed the critical role of the Barangay Nutrition Committees (BNCs) in organizing, mobilizing, and revitalizing nutrition programs within the community. Participants actively engaged in assessing the functionality of their respective committees, guided by Nutrition Officer II Mariella P. Rayco.
Moreover, Labordo emphasized the importance of investing in nutrition and guided participants in setting the vision, mission, and outcome objectives for their barangays. He encouraged them to think critically about their goals for improving community health through nutrition. The day concluded with a workshop focused on refining these objectives, allowing participants to present and critique their ideas.
The second day began with a recap of previous sessions, followed by an introduction to the Barangay Nutrition Action Plan (BNAP) preparation process presented by NOII Rayco of NNC Caraga. Subsequently, NOII Rayco facilitated a workshop on situational analysis and problem tree development, enabling participants to identify key issues affecting nutrition in their barangays.
On the other hand, RNPC Labordo discussed the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2023-2028, encouraging participants to align their nutrition programs with the plan's outcome result areas. The workshop also included prioritizing nutrition interventions and estimating budgets, which are crucial for effective implementation in the community.
As the workshop concluded, participants presented their improved outputs and received comments from the speakers. The Bayugan City Nutrition Action Officer delivered a closing message that reinforced the importance of collaboration and ongoing dedication to improving the nutritional health of the community.
The Local Nutrition Action Planning Workshop marked a crucial milestone in Bayugan City’s efforts to combat malnutrition and promote healthier lifestyles among its residents. By empowering local leaders and members of the barangay nutrition committees, the BNCs are positioned to make a lasting impact on the health and well-being of the community.
