407 persons deprived of liberty in Surigao Sur benefit from TUPAD

By Nida Grace P. Barcena

TANDAG CITY, Surigao del Sur (PIA) -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Surigao del Sur recently provided emergency employment assistance to 407 persons deprived of liberty (PDL) through the program on Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD).

With a budget of P1,726,697.50, the program covered the salaries of the PDL for their 10-day work period, personal protective equipment, and a year of insurance coverage.

The PDL, from various facilities including the Surigao del Sur District Jail, Cantilan District Jail, Lianga District Jail, and Bislig City Jail, engaged in community gardening under the supervision of their respective jail wardens.

The beneficiaries availed the training facilitated by Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) on massage therapy and food processing for their reintegration to society.

Rona, a PDL from Cantilan District Jail, expressed gratitude to the government for offering the TUPAD program saying, “I am very grateful for the TUPAD program. This is a huge help for me in my current situation. The salary I received will greatly assist my family, especially the needs of my child in school.”

DOLE Surigao del Sur headed by Genebelle B. Bal confirmed that each participant earned P3,850 for their 10-day work that provided new skills and support to the beneficiaries’ transition back to society, reducing the chances of re-offending.

Through TUPAD, DOLE is committed to the rehabilitation and empowerment of the PDL, showing positive impact on their lives, families and the communities. (NGPB, PIA-Surigao del Sur)
