DPWH initiates construction of seawall in Surigao Sur’s town

MARIHATAG, Surigao del Sur (PIA) -- In a decisive move towards bolstering coastal resilience, the Surigao del Sur 1st District Engineering Office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) under the leadership of Engr. Ruel B. Bantugan, spearheaded the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Marihatag seawall.

The momentous event recently held in Marihatag, Surigao del Sur garnered significant attention from key stakeholders, including the House Committee Chair on Public Works and Highways, Surigao Sur 1st District Congressional Representative Romeo S. Momo Sr., as he attended the occasion. Joined by officials from Brgy. Poblacion, Marihatag, the ceremony symbolized a united front in fortifying the coastal community against natural adversities.

Commencing on April 2, 2024, the project is slated for completion by November 30, 2024 as this will span an impressive 504.40 linear meters, featuring robust slope protection coupled with a wave deflector and a 0.23-meter-thick concrete pavement. This comprehensive infrastructure endeavor is strategically designed to shield residents from the perils of harmful waves during typhoons and adverse weather conditions.

The groundbreaking ceremony not only marked the commencement of construction but also signified a proactive response to the pressing needs of the community. With the looming threat of climate change exacerbating the frequency and intensity of natural disasters, the Marihatag seawall emerged as a beacon of hope, promising safety and security for generations to come.

As construction progresses, the DPWH, Surigao del Sur 1st District Engineering Office remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering infrastructure solutions that prioritize the well-being and resilience of communities. Through collaborative efforts and unwavering dedication, this project stands as a testament to the power of collective action in safeguarding vulnerable coastal areas. (DPWH-SDS/PIA-SDS)
