Port of Surigao bids for int'l sustainability award

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte --  The groundbreaking of the Data Collaboration Project, jointly participated by the Port Management Office (PMO) of Surigao and MarineTraffic, garnered acclaim within the World Ports Sustainability Program, as it has been selected as a candidate for the prestigious Sustainability Awards organized by the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH).

The collaboration, submitted in the 'Digitalization' category, revolutionized the operational practices of PMO Surigao by enabling remote verification of vessel port stays during loading operations at anchorage.

This breakthrough allowed an accurate assessment and collection of port charges, which corresponded to the actual duration of vessels' stays. Leveraging the real-time insights and comprehensive data provided by marinetraffic.com, the world's foremost maritime analytics provider. With this PMO Surigao successfully monitored the port stays of foreign vessels at private ports, ensuring the correct allocation of charges.

The IAPH Sustainability Awards is comprised of six categories, each aligned with the core themes of the World Ports Sustainability Program. These themes include Climate and Energy, Infrastructure, Digitalization, Community Building, Environmental Care, and Health, Safety, and Security. Additionally, a special "Akiyama" award named in honor of Toru Akiyama, former Secretary-General of IAPH from 1967 to 1973, will be presented to the highest-ranking finalist from a Least Developed Country, a Landlocked Developing Country, or a Small Island Developing State.

The winners of the IAPH Sustainability Awards will be announced at the esteemed World Ports Conference 2023, scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi, UAE, from October 31 to November 2, 2023. This global gathering of industry leaders and experts aims to foster dialogue and collaboration on sustainable practices in the maritime sector.(PMO Surigao/PIA-Surigao del Norte)
