MinDA, DENR, partners all set for this year’s TreeVolution: Greening MindaNOW

BUTUAN CITY, Sept. 3 (PIA) – The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and other partners in the government are all set for this year’s Mindanao-wide campaign dubbed as “TreeVolution: Greening MindaNOW,” on September 26, 2014.

The MinDA together with its partner agencies in the government and private sector aims to plant 4,636,000 trees in multiple locations covering a total of 9,200 hectares in just one hour.

Cecilia TriΓ±o, Caraga Area Manager of MinDA reiterated that this will also serve as a campaign to improve environmental awareness among all Mindanawons.

“Mindanao will turn green as a quarter of a million Mindanawons attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the Most Number of Trees Planted Simultaneously in Multiple Locations in One Hour on September 26, 2014,” TriΓ±o emphasized.

This initiative also supports the National Greening Program that targets 1.5 million hectares reforested by 2016 to which Mindanao’s contribution is 456,000 hectares and the MindaNOW! Nurturing Our Waters Program which aims to harmonize the management of Mindanao’s natural resources.

Also, the representatives from the concerned government agencies will convene the media on September 4 for a press conference on the said big event and it will be held at the Robinson’s Atrium, Butuan City.

OWWA, DOST to hold EDSP, CMWSP examinations

BUTUAN CITY, Sept. 3 (PIA) – The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) in coordination with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Caraga announced that they will be conducting a qualifying examination on September 21, 2014 for its Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) and Congressional Migrants Scholarship Program (CMWSP) for school year 2015-2016.

In a press conference held on Tuesday in one of the local convention centers here, OWWA-Caraga regional director Eduardo Bellido bared that a total of 181 OFW dependents are expected to take the scholarship qualifying exam, 170 applicants for EDSP and 11 applicants for CMWSP.

“EDSP is intended for immediate dependent of active OWWA member OFW who intends to enroll in any 4-5 year baccalaureate degree consisting of P60,000.00 per school year. Meanwhile, the CMWSP grants P30,000.00 per school year to qualified child of former OFW who intends to pursue 4-5 year baccalaureate course in Science and Technology, Engineering or any applied sciences,” disclosed Bellido.

Bellido added that tuition fees shall be paid directly to the school while the remaining amount shall be released to the scholar upon submission of the grades for the semester.

The CMWSP, on the other hand, is another baccalaureate scholarship program mandated by Republic Act 10022 and is funded by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO). (JPG/PIA-Caraga)


OFWs, dependents continue to benefit OWWA’s short-term education, training program

BUTUAN CITY, Sept. 3 (PIA) – “We are encouraging more of our OFWs and their legal dependents to avail of OWWA’s short-term education and training program for their personal growth and better employment.”

This was the statement of Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Caraga regional director Eduardo Bellido, during a press conference held on Tuesday in one of the local convention centers here.

“The IT training is a free training which aims to give the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their dependents access to technology-based training in the hope that this will give them the skills to find better employment opportunities as well as help bridge the physical divide between the workers and their families in the Philippines,” bared Bellido.

Bellido also said that for this year, OWWA targeted around 600 availees for IT. According to him, there were already 487 OFWs and OFW dependents that have availed under IT training course.

Bellido further announced that the Skills for Employment Scholarship Program (SESP) is offered to active member OFWs and their legal dependents who intend to enroll in any short-term training program consisting of a maximum of P14,500.00 per course leading to a completion of a vocational or technical course in any Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA)-accredited school.

It was also learned that the Seafarers’ Upgrading Program (SUP) is a scholarship grant for seafarers who intend to enroll to short-term upgrading courses. Under the said program, the seafarer can avail of P7,500.00 training assistance. Availment in another training course will be every after three recorded membership.

“As of today, there were 29 seafarers enrolled under SUP, 22 of which have already graduated,” he remarked.

Dinagat Islands joins 20th NCPW, peace month celeb

SAN JOSE, Dinagat Islands, Sept. 3 (PIA) - Despite the adverse weather condition, the provincial government of Dinagat Islands through the Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) was still able to conduct a kick-off ceremony in observance of the 20th National Crime Prevention Week and Peace Month here on Monday, September 1, 2014.

A motorcade around the province and a short program kicked-off the month-long celebration participated in by the Philippine National Police, Department of the Interior and Local Government, members of the Provincial and Municipal Peace and Order Council, and government employees.

Vice Governor Benglen B. Ecleo, in his message, urged everyone to work hand in hand with the government for the prevention of crimes in the province.

 "Let us keep this place as peaceful as we always wanted it to be and let us help each other in combating crimes in our province," Ecleo said.

Meanwhile, Provincial Administrator Millard Tawakal, in behalf of Governor Glenda B. Ecleo, said that the month-long observance aims to strengthen the bond between the youth, law enforcers, and other sectors of the society not only in the fight against crime but also in its prevention through awareness campaigns and increase commitment, youth participation and partnerships in the promotion of proactive approaches in reducing crime.

To highlight the month-long observance, various contests for students from the seven municipalities are set to deepen their understanding and awareness.

SURSECO II set for 35th anniversary celebration

TANDAG CITY, Sept. 3 (PIA) – Surigao del Sur Electric Cooperative II (SURSECO II), which covers the first district of the province as its service area, is set to celebrate its 35th anniversary on September 6, according to General Manager (GM) Engr. Iglorio Hinayon.

The affair will highlight the Sitio Electrification Program (SEP) Ceremonial Energization, Friendship Games, Outreach Activities at the Adela Serra-Ty Memorial Medical Center (ASTMMC), and Loyalty Service Awarding Ceremony, he said.

In an invitation letter sent to Governor Johnny Pimentel, Hinayon stressed that they remain steadfast in their “vision and mission in giving quality service to the member-consumers and in fulfilling the national goal of total electrification and promoting consumer interest and satisfaction.”

In fact, GM Hinayon bared that this year, the National Electrification Administration (NEA) has allotted some P14,000,000 for SEP; about P9,000,000 of which, have already been put in place.

He likewise said that SURSECO II has already over 56,000 billed consumers as of latest.

AGUSAN DEL SUR, Setyembre 3 (PIA) - Ang balangkas ng Bangsamoro Basic Law ay kasalukuyang nasa pinal na baitang ng pagpipino at ito ay isusumite sa Kongreso bago umalis si si Pangulong Benigno S. Aquino patungo sa Europa at sa Estados Unidos sa susunod na linggo.

“Ang balangkas na BBL ay kasalukuyang nasa pinal na baiting ng pagpipino. Sa tantiya ng MILF (Moro Islamic Liberation Front) at tsirman ng Bangsamoro Transition Commission na si Mohagner Iqbal, ang balangkas ng panukalang batas ay nasa 99 porsyento tapos,” sabi ni Presidential Peace adviser Teresita Deles noong Martes.

Ang pagsusuring muli ng pangulo sa balangkas ng Bangsamoro basic law ay nakompleto halos dalawang linggo na ang nakaraan, basi sa komento ng Pangulo.

Kapwa ang gobyerno at grupo MILF ay gumawa ng pag-uusap at palitan ng nota at ang resulta ay isinumite rin sa Pangulo, sabi ni Deles.

Ang pamahalaan at ang MILF ay lumagda ng Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro noong nakaraang Marso na ang tukoy ay tapusin ang deka-dekadang nakasanayang pagkahiwalay ng Muslim sa Mindanao.

Kapag naipasa na nang Kongreso, isang plebisito ang gagawin at ang trasition authority ay lilikhain bago ang pagganap ng isang halalan kasabay ng 2016 na halalan.
