DOLE’s internship helps Surigaonon secure gov’t jobs

By Nida Grace P. Barcena

MADRID, Surigao del Sur (PIA) — For Hilyn A. Estrada, a government career once seemed difficult to reach. Like many jobseekers, the 36-year-old resident of Barangay Linibonan, Madrid, had the determination to work in government but lacked the experience and opportunity to secure a permanent position.

That changed when she joined the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) Government Internship Program (GIP) in June 2024.

Estrada was assigned to the barangay local government unit (BLGU) of San Juan, Madrid, where she handled administrative tasks, organized records, prepared documents, and assisted in various barangay programs. What began as a temporary work opportunity became a practical learning experience that helped her build confidence and develop skills needed in the workplace.

“The internship taught me more than office procedures. It taught me how to communicate effectively, work with a team, and become accountable in everything I do. Those lessons continue to guide me even today,” Estrada said.

Her experience also gave her a firsthand look at public service and how government workers respond to the needs of their communities. With the knowledge she gained, she became more confident in pursuing her goal of securing a permanent government position.

Knowing that her internship would eventually end, Estrada continued submitting applications while making the most of her time under the GIP.

“I never stopped applying because I knew the internship would eventually end. But I believed the experience I gained would prepare me for bigger opportunities,” she said.

Her persistence eventually paid off.

While still under the GIP, Estrada secured a plantilla position as Administrative Officer II at Pantukan Integrated School of the Department of Education in Carrascal, Surigao del Sur.

For Estrada, the transition from intern to regular government employee was more than a career milestone. It was an affirmation that the experience, discipline, and confidence she gained through the program had prepared her for greater responsibilities.

“The GIP gave me the experience I needed to become more confident. It prepared me for the responsibilities of a regular government employee and inspired me to continue serving the public,” she said.

Beyond technical skills, Estrada carried with her lessons on professionalism, accountability, transparency, teamwork, and commitment to public service.

Her experience highlights the role of the GIP in helping jobseekers gain practical workplace exposure and strengthen their employability. By providing opportunities to work in government offices, the program helps participants develop competencies that can prepare them for employment and future career opportunities.

For Estrada, the internship was never the destination. It was the first step toward the career she had long hoped for.

Her journey shows how access to employment opportunities, combined with determination and continuous learning, can help turn uncertainty into a pathway toward stable work and a more secure future. (NGPB, PIA Surigao del Sur/Photo courtesy of DOLE)
