DSWD aids Surigao Sur youth as they transition from school to work

By Nida Grace P. Barcena

TAGBINA, Surigao del Sur (PIA)  As they prepare to step into the workforce or continue their academic journey, college graduates and students of the North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU)-Tagbina Campus in the province received timely support from the government through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Caraga.

A total of 175 graduates and students benefited from the DSWD’s program on Cash-for-Work (CFW) with the payout conducted on December 16, marking the final CFW activity of the year.

Each beneficiary received P9,570 in exchange for 22 days of community-based work, with a total disbursement of P1,674,750.

Implemented under the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI-CIDSS), the CFW provided short-term employment while helping ease financial pressures faced by young people transitioning from school to employment. The assistance supported daily needs, educational expenses, and job-search requirements, reinforcing the government’s commitment to youth empowerment and inclusive development.

For many beneficiaries, the program offered not only financial relief but also motivation as they plan their next steps.

“This is a big help for us because it supports our daily expenses and our preparation for employment. It’s not just financial assistance, but also encouragement that the government is looking after our situation,”  said one student-beneficiary.

DSWD Caraga emphasized that the CFW goes beyond income support, as it also promotes productivity, work discipline, and community participation among young beneficiaries. By engaging students and graduates in meaningful work, the program helps build readiness for future employment while addressing immediate economic needs.

With the completion of the final CFW payout for this year, DSWD Caraga reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining responsive social protection programs that invest in the youth, strengthen community resilience, and support inclusive growth across the region. (NGPB, PIA Surigao del Sur)
