BUTUAN CITY(PIA) — Hours before Typhoon Tino’s estimated landfall in the northern part of the Caraga region, the city government of Butuan, through the City Social Welfare and Development Department (CSWDD), has prepared relief goods for residents under threat.
Youth volunteers from the Pag-asa Youth Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PYAP) and Sangguniang Kabataan from Barangay Holy Redeemer are actively packing food supplies to ensure that relief food packs are ready in case of evacuation due to flooding.
Quality control during the packing process is also being maintained to ensure that each pack is complete and ready for distribution.
AJ Tanso, CSWDD youth focal person, expressed gratitude to all the volunteers who helped with the packing. He highlighted the significant contribution of youth volunteers to the city’s quick and timely response.
“Butuan City is now under the Red Alert Status as declared by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, allowing full activation of response operations for an efficient and effective response operation,” Tanso said.
According to CSWDD, “As of 5:00 p.m., 14 barangays have been affected by flooding due to severe rain, affecting a total of 384 families or 1,282 individuals.”
A total of 251 families affected by rising floodwaters have been served and provided relief assistance by the CSWDD, which promised to continue its operation of delivering relief goods and services to the remaining unserved residents.
CSWDD also urged everyone to remain alert, especially as Typhoon Tino was expected to make landfall on Nov. 3. Also, residents living near the Agusan River and in low-lying and coastal areas are advised to evacuate immediately to ensure their safety. (MFC, with a report from CSWDD)
