Agusan Norte intensifies avian flu surveillance activities

BUTUAN CITY (PIA) — To safeguard both animal and public health, the Provincial Veterinary (PVet) Office of Agusan del Norte has launched its Surveillance Monitoring Activities for avian influenza or bird flu this season of bird migration.
During this period, migratory birds from various countries enter the province, potentially carrying viruses or diseases that could infect local bird populations and even pose risks to human health.
The monitoring activities focus on identified high-risk areas with wide wetland ecosystems in the municipalities of Kitcharao, Jabonga, and Santiago, locations known to attract large numbers of migratory birds each year.
Technical personnel from the PVet Office have begun collecting blood samples and oropharyngeal and cloacal swabs from commercial and backyard poultry farms in barangays near the wetlands. This early detection measure is crucial in preventing local transmission and controlling any potential outbreak.
A follow-up blood sampling activity is scheduled in March 2026, coinciding with the fly-out season, to ensure sustained monitoring and continued protection of the province against bird flu.
Provincial Veterinarian Belen Aruelo stressed the significance of the initiative not only for Agusan del Norte but for a much wider area. “Avian influenza remains a serious threat, especially during the migratory season. Our proactive surveillance and strong collaboration with partner agencies allow us to protect our poultry sector, ensure food security, and keep our communities safe, not just in Agusan del Norte but also in nearby provinces and the country as a whole.”
Agusan del Norte Governor Ma. Angelica Rosedell M. Amante commended the ongoing surveillance efforts, emphasizing their long-term benefits for the province and beyond. “This monitoring activity creates a big impact on our ability to prevent the spread of avian influenza. By acting early and staying vigilant, we are protecting our local poultry farmers, ensuring the health of our communities, and contributing to national biosecurity efforts.”
“Agusan del Norte remains committed to proactive measures that safeguard our people and support a resilient agricultural sector,” Gov. Amante said.
Through the dedication of its technical team and the cooperation of the Bureau of Animal Industry and the municipal agriculture offices, Agusan del Norte continues to strengthen its surveillance systems and preventive strategies.
This activity plays a vital role in protecting livelihoods, maintaining consumer confidence in poultry products, and ensuring the safety and resilience of Agusanons, neighboring communities, and the broader national poultry industry. (NCLM, PIA Agusan del Norte)
