Agusan Sur transforms wood waste into power

PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur (PIA) — The challenge on the disposal of waste materials generated from the wood processing plants (WPP) will now turn into a blessing with the groundbreaking ceremony of the new Biomass Gasification Power Plant in the municipality of Talacogon in Agusan del Sur.
With this environment-friendly facility, sawdust and other wood by-products, previously considered waste, will now serve as feedstock for the power plant. These will be processed into pellets and wood chips, making them easier to feed in the powerplant.
“All kinds of waste materials that have long been a burden to our wood industry will now be utilized. The local government unit (LGU) of Talacogon, through the Sangguniang Bayan’s ordinance has ensured that all wood processing waste will be put and collected at the waste recovery center and converted into fuel,” said Engineer Reyman Zamora, chief executive officer (CEO) of Oro Energy Resources Corporation, during the groundbreaking on September 2.
He added that the power plant aims to produce five megawatts of electricity to supply the needs of all wood processing plants in the area. “Any excess electricity will be sold to the Agusan del Sur Electric Cooperative, Inc. (ASELCO), the province’s local electricity provider.”
Agusan del Sur District 1 Board Member Jesryl Masendo also shared the long-term benefit of the biomass power plant. “One of the recurring problems of the wood processing plants in Talacogon is the sudden blackouts and power shortages that disrupt their operations. With this project, we envision providing them with stable electricity, ensuring continuous operations and revitalizing the industry in Talacogon.”
Talacogon, known as the wood processing capital of Agusan del Sur, hosts numerous WPPs due to its rich supply of quality raw materials. The LGU affirms that the project will not only address the long-standing issue of waste disposal, but also open opportunities for economic growth and environmental care.
“We envision a collaboration not only with the national government but also with the community and other stakeholders, as we are all beneficiaries of this initiative,” said Talacogon Mayor Pauline Marie Masendo. (KKRG, PIA Agusan del Sur with the report from PTV Agusan del Sur)
