Basketball on Wheels: LGU Butuan empowers PWDs thru inclusivity in sports

By Mariesh F. CeledeΓ±a

BUTUAN CITY (PIA) —The city government of Butuan recently spearheaded a Basketball on Wheels, making sports inclusive to persons with disability (PWDs).

Organized by the City Social Welfare and Development Department (CSWDD), Butuan City Persons with Disability Federation, and the Persons with Disability Affairs Office (PDAO), the basketball event was held in celebration of the National Disability Rights (NDR) Week. The basketball on wheels featured the players with disabilities bound in wheelchairs of the Crocodile Team from Rosario, Agusan del Sur, and the Butuan Team of the Butuan City Persons with Disability Federation.

The game highlighted the stamina and endurance of the players despite their physical challenges, showcasing not just their competitive skill and spirit, but also their teamwork, and passion for the game.

More than a sporting event, the activity served as a platform that promotes inclusivity and raises awareness and empowers the PWD sector through sports, inspiring others to think differently and positively on disability.

“Disability does not define you. Your heart does,” said Atty. Rema Burdeos, Butuan City councilor, as she called the PWD sector to be brave in expressing themselves, show their abilities, and let their voices be heard.

“The city government is here, always ready to listen and support your needs,” she added.

According to Lovelynn Mae N. Plaza, assistant city social welfare and development officer, “It is important to conduct various activities for the PWDs to allow them to showcase their talents and skills. Activities like this give them high morale and empowerment. Today, we encourage them, uplift their spirits, and validate their worth in society.”

“Paragames is not only a game, this is a platform to showcase our own abilities, and celebrate our capabilities, and inspire our fellow person PWDs because we recognize the PWDs significant roles in the community,” shared Richie Ravelo, president of the Butuan City PWD Federation,  during the Paragames held in Philippine Science High School gymnasium in Butuan City.

“Do not be ashamed, we too have rights. Let us stand and raise our voices, and be involved in expressing our dreams for the sector and the future,” he added. (MFC, PIA Butuan City)
