Agusan Sur's first mpox patient nears full recovery

PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur -- The Democrito O. Plaza Memorial Hospital (DOPMH) has confirmed that the province’s first case of mpox is now close to full recovery.

This was confirmed by Dr. Annie Abordo-Dioso, an infectious disease specialist, during the recent episode of the Department Information Officers (DIO) Hour, a radio program hosted by the Provincial Public Information Office (PPIO).

“The patient is now recovering from the symptoms caused by mpox. The Department of Health-Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) Caraga provided us with the necessary medication, which is administered twice daily for 14 days,” Dr. Dioso said. She added that the patient is under close medical monitoring and has shown no adverse reactions to the treatment so far.

“As of today, there are no other reported cases of mpox in the province. We continue to urge the public to practice proper hygiene where hand washing is the most fundamental, and other preventive measures, especially those with weakened immune systems,” Dr. Dioso emphasized.

Health authorities in Agusan del Sur continue to monitor the situation and strengthen public awareness campaigns to prevent further transmission. Dr. Dioso further stressed that the advocacy against the spread of infectious diseases is being heightened in line with this year’s Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Week celebration.

"With the theme, ‘IPC Champions: Leading the way to safe healthcare’, we are intensifying our advocacy against the spread of infectious diseases. This is a timely reminder of the importance of practicing proper hygiene, following health protocols, and ensuring community awareness to protect the most vulnerable, especially those with weakened immune systems. Preventing infection starts within each of us, and through continued education and vigilance, we can safeguard our communities," she added. (Jennifer P. Gaitano, PAMRE-PPIO Agusan del Sur)
