PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur (PIA) — Governor Santiago B. Cane Jr. of the provincial government of Agusan del Sur welcomed all the nutrition partners in attendance as the host province of this year’s launching of the National Nutrition Month.
With the theme, “Food and Nutrition Security, Maging Priority! Sapat na Pagkain, Karapatan Natin!,” the celebration underscored every Filipino’s right to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food. Cane encouraged all attendees, held at the Datu Lipus covered court, Gov. D.O. Plaza Government Center, Patin-ay, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur, to take active roles in advancing food and nutrition security.
“Nutrition is not only a right but an obligation. It is not the sole responsibility of the government to ensure that nutritious foods are provided to our families. Rather, it is the responsibility of each one of us, most especially the parents,” said Gov. Cane.
He further emphasized how the government’s role is only instrumental to provide access to nutrition, and that the decision to sustain it lies within each member of the community.
“No matter how much resources are provided by the government, if we do not do our part in teaching our youth to eat nutritious foods and plant more vegetables, then the efforts of the government remain futile. And so, let us work together in achieving our goal to end malnutrition in every home,” he added.
“In Agusan del Sur, we are committed to boosting food productivity, which is why we established a state-of-the-art soil laboratory in the province. Through this facility, we can help our farmers determine the exact inputs to their soil needs—whether it’s the right type of fertilizer or soil amendments—based on scientific data. This promotes sustainable farming practices, reduces unnecessary costs, and ensures higher yields. Ultimately, this initiative supports food security and allows us to put more nutritious and safe food on the tables,” he said.
The governor highlighted the continued operation of the ‘Nutrition Village’ in the province, which provides nutritious food to malnourished and hospitalized children in Agusan del Sur. He likewise emphasized the importance of collective action—from local government units, communities, and families—to prioritize nutrition as a foundation for a healthier, and more productive society.
