PIA chief visits Agusan Sur, lauds first state-of-the-art Research Lab

PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur -- Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Director-General Katherine Chloe De Castro, together with Regional Head Venus Garcia and the PIA Caraga team, paid a courtesy visit to the Provincial Government of Agusan del Sur (PGAS) headed by Governor Santiago Cane Jr. on Monday, July 21.

The visit also aims to strengthen the collaboration between PIA and PGAS through the Provincial Public Information Office (PPIO) in amplifying communication strategies, promoting developmental programs, and ensuring that accurate and timely information reaches communities, especially in far-flung areas.

During the visit, De Castro was briefed on the province’s state-of-the-art Research Laboratory, described as the first of its kind in the country.

Cane highlighted the importance of the soils laboratory in supporting the province's farmers, noting that it will help improve agricultural productivity by identifying the most suitable crops for the specific types of soil in each locality.

“Agusan del Sur is a landlocked province. Even before the establishment of the research laboratory, we were already the top rice producer in the region. With this new facility, we can expect even greater agricultural gains,” Cane shared.

De Castro expressed her appreciation for the developments she witnessed in the province.

“This is my first time visiting the Caraga region, and I’m glad to be here in Agusan del Sur to witness the infrastructure developments particularly the Research Laboratory, including the facilities being prepared for the upcoming Palarong Pambansa,” she said.

Gov. Cane personally toured DG De Castro and the PIA Caraga team around the Research Laboratory. He showed them the advanced equipment and discussed how the facility will be operated. Chemical engineers at the laboratory also presented the soil testing process, giving insights into how data-driven farming will be promoted in the province.

"I commend the Provincial Government of Agusan del Sur for its forward-thinking initiatives and unwavering commitment to development. From agricultural innovation to infrastructure readiness for the Palarong Pambansa, these efforts truly reflect the province’s dedication to progress and service to its people,” De Castro underscored.

The Governor also noted the national government’s support for agriculture under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration, stating that relevant interventions are being provided to ensure sustainable agricultural development.

Before departing Agusan del Sur for her next engagement in Davao City, DG De Castro also visited the swimming pool and observed the ongoing construction of additional sports facilities within the government center premises, which are set to be used for the upcoming Palarong Pambansa.

"I will surely share this good news at the national level, and I look forward to returning next year for the Palarong Pambansa," DG De Castro expressed with enthusiasm. (JPG, PAMRE-PPIO Agusan del Sur/PIA Agusan del Sur)
