PMO Surigao leads coastal cleanup in Surigao City, Siargao Islands
SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte -- A coordinated environmental initiative led by the Port Management Office (PMO) of Surigao removed over 100 kilograms of waste from vital waterways and streets in Surigao City and Siargao Islands.
A comprehensive coastal and street clean-up was conducted on March 1, as part of PMO Surigao’s ongoing community outreach program for the environment.
Port Manager Froila Caturla said, “The activity focused on the water areas within the docking zone and surrounding areas of the Port of Surigao, with a parallel effort taking place at the Port of Dapa in Siargao Islands, organized by the Terminal Management Office (TMO) of Siargao Island.”
He added that the coastal cleanup specifically targeted plastics, glass, and other pollutants known to harm marine life and damage coastal ecosystems, while the street cleanup covered the entire stretch from the Port Area along Borromeo Street to Punta Bilang-Bilang.
"Environmental experts noted that such volunteer-driven efforts are essential in areas like Surigao City and Siargao Island where marine resources play a vital role in the local economy and culture," Caturla shared.
PMO Surigao emphasized that the program extended beyond mere waste removal. It also raised awareness on pollution, responsible waste disposal, and environmental conservation among port users, employees, and surrounding communities.
