Legal office in Agusan Sur briefs gov't workers on relevance of Constitutional Week celeb

By Kelvin Kennt R. Generalo

PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur -- The Provincial Legal Office (PLO) of Agusan del Sur convened all government officials and employees of the provincial government of Agusan del Sur (PGAS), including its local government units (LGUs), for the celebration of Philippine Constitutional Week, held at the Democrito O. Plaza Government Center, covered court in Patin-ay, Prosperidad, this province.

The observance from February 17 to 21 is in compliance with Proclamation No. 515 issued on January 9, 1995 by then-President Fidel V. Ramos and to promote awareness and understanding of the Philippine Constitution among citizens.

Crucial topics were highlighted in the activity, including human rights, ethical standards for government officials and employees, and the Safe Spaces Act also known as the "Bawal ang Bastos" Law, aiming to promote a respectful and harassment-free workplace.

“As government employees, it is very important for us to uphold the rights of every citizen. We should be well-versed in these rights because we are responsible for protecting them. Not only as citizens but also as public servants, we must exercise and defend our rights for the benefit of the people we serve,” said Attorney Janssen Michael Albienda, legal officer III of PGAS.

“Public office is a public trust. Government employees must adhere to the ethical standards and laws set by our government. The Safe Spaces Act is particularly relevant in the workplace, as it addresses issues such as gender sensitivity and professional interactions. It is essential for us to foster a culture of respect—toward our colleagues, clients, and the citizens we serve," he added.

The convergence deepened the public servants’ understanding of constitutional principles, human rights, and ethical responsibilities. By strengthening their knowledge on democracy and governance, this will enhance accountability, promote national unity, and encourage responsible citizenship in the province of Agusan del Sur.
