BUTUAN CITY - Serving as inspiration to the young ones, the senior citizens who belong to the so-called nonagenarians called on youth to live a simple and healthy lifestyle to have a long and happy life.
In time with the inaugural cash gift distribution conducted by the National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC) Caraga on February 26, held at the covered court of Barangay Doongan of this city, the identified nonagenarians from Butuan and several municipalities of Agusan del Norte shared tips on how to reach the age of 95 and beyond.
Florencio Buhoy from Brgy. Poblacion of Las Nieves, Agusan del Norte, revealed that he maintains eating vegetables and fish as these are nutritious and healthy.
“Isa jud sa hinungdan nga motaas ang kinabuhi mao ang pag-iwas sa mga bisyo nga dili makaayo sa atong kalawasan. Mao ng habang bata pa mo, angay nga mamuyo nga simple lang ug kailangan aduna gayud exercise para aktibo atong lawas,” he said.
(One of the reasons why people live longer is because they live simple and avoid vices. Exercise is also important.)
During this occasion, both the octogenarians and nonagenarians received the cash gift amounting to P10,000.00 (each), along with the birthday cards and certificates from the NCSC.
According to Sarah Rose Salingay, acting project development officer V of NCSC Regional Office 13, the Republic Act 11982 underscored the importance of recognizing and honoring Filipino senior citizens for their valuable contributions to society, fostering a culture of respect and appreciation across generations.
“Prior to RA 11982, recognition was limited to centenarians, leaving a gap in acknowledging octogenarians and nonagenarians, who also deserved recognition and support,” she said.
She further expressed that given this age [90 and above] is really a privilege, “as not everyone is able to experience it.” (JPG, PIA Caraga)
