TAGBINA, Surigao del Sur – The national government’s commitment to social protection reached the grassroots level as the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Caraga, in partnership with the Municipal Government of Tagbina, successfully distributed over P10 million in social pension to more than 3,400 indigent senior citizens in the municipality.

The first-quarter payout recently provided eligible senior citizens with much-needed financial assistance, ensuring they receive the necessary support for their daily sustenance, healthcare, and other basic needs.

The initiative aligns with the national government’s goal of enhancing social protection, particularly for the elderly. The program is a testament to the government’s unwavering commitment to improving the quality of life of the senior citizens.

Social pension: A vital lifeline for the elderly

The Social Pension Program for indigent senior citizens, implemented by DSWD nationwide, provided a bimonthly stipend to help cover essential expenses such as food, medicines, and other daily necessities. The program primarily supported elderly individuals who have no regular income, pension, or family support.

For many beneficiaries, the assistance served as a lifeline. Lola Maria, shared how the program helped her afford maintenance medicines. “I rely on this pension to buy my medicines and food. At my age, I can no longer work, so this program is really a blessing,” she said in her local dialect.

Strengthening social services at the local level

The Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) of Tagbina, in coordination with DSWD Caraga, ensured the efficient distribution of funds, emphasizing transparency and accessibility for all beneficiaries.

According to Glenn B. Lazaro, Special Program Division chief of Tagbina, the LGU remains committed to ensuring that government assistance reaches its intended recipients without delay or difficulty, He emphasized that the program is not just about financial aid, it is about honoring their dignity and well-being.
