TUPAD reaches NIA’s farmer irrigators in Caraga

BUTUAN CITY -- In a significant step towards community rebuilding, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)  partnered with the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) under the DOLE’s program on Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) to assist NIA-supported associations in restoring critical infrastructure.

This collaborative initiative focused on repairing irrigation canals and water dams, which are essential to the community's agricultural livelihood.

The first DOLE-TUPAD and NIA Payout took place on August 30 at the NIA Agricultural Farmer’s Center, Rosario, Agusan del Sur. This was witnessed by DOLE Assistant Regional Director Raymond Fel F. Sajor and Provincial Head Buhawe B. Corvera-Correa, together with NIA – Agusan del Sur Division Manager Peter E. Pablo.

The convergence captured the thrust of DOLE since beneficiaries were not just aided in boosting the agricultural productivity of the area but also strengthened the local economy by providing sustainable solutions to water management challenges.

The NIA-assisted association and TUPAD beneficiaries planted community gardens along the canals. These gardens are designed to support the residents with fresh produce, especially during their monthly “pahina” or community workdays.

“With the convergence that we have right now, we saw how impactful it is to the beneficiaries, especially to the irrigators. Our department is always ready to assist and help you. Rest assured, it will not be the last time that our program will work with NIA,” ARD Sajor said,

Rudel R. Labe, the NIA coordinator for the program on TUPAD also presented how the program was able to help Irrigators associations.

“Ang tubig na dili muaabot sa tumoy kay muawas tungod sa tupad na sa ilang trabaho ang mga buslot og guba na irrigation na rehabilitate na (There is already a free flow of water as damaged parts of irrigation has been repaired),” he said, as he expressed hope that this will not be the last but the first  step toward better collaboration and convergence of both agency.

This activity served a total of 67 irrigators association members receiving a salary of P3,850 for ten working days and a total of  P357.950 as DOLE’s assistance.

This dual-purpose project showcased how government partnerships can address both infrastructure needs and food security concerns, improving the quality of life for residents. Through this convergence, the community is empowered to work together not only to rebuild but also to create lasting solutions for their agricultural and nutritional needs for Agsurnon.
