Level III hospital in Surigao Sur performs first spine surgery

TANDAG CITY, Surigao del Sur -- The Adela Serra Ty Memorial Medical Center (ASTMMC), approved as Level III hospital in Caraga region, achieved a significant milestone by successfully conducting its first-ever spine surgery on September 19.

Marking a transformative advancement in orthopedic care for the local community, this pioneering operation underscored the hospital’s commitment to elevating patient care and expanding its medical services to the communities in the region.

The procedure was expertly led by Dr. Jesronnne Abrea, a highly trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in spinal surgeries. He was supported by a dedicated team of  an anesthesiologist, surgical assistant, radiologic technologist, and a skilled nursing staff. Their collaborative efforts were vital in navigating the complexities of the surgery, ensuring a successful outcome for the patient.

The patient “Rey” had battled debilitating back pain for years, exhausting all non-invasive treatment options. As he entered the operating room, a mix of anxiety and hope filled the air, with everyone aware that this surgery could change his life.

With precision and care, the surgical team worked diligently, and after several hours, the procedure was declared a success. The outcome did not only bring hope to the patient but also served as a beacon for other community members who may benefit from advanced surgical options.

The successful completion of this surgery marked the beginning of a new chapter for Adela Serra Ty Memorial Medical Center. The institution is now poised to expand its orthopedic services, aiming to evolve into a 500-bed level 3 hospital offering comprehensive orthopedic and rehabilitation care.

As news of the successful surgery spread throughout Surigao del Sur, of which the patient had already been discharged from the hospital, a renewed sense of optimism emerged. The local community, which has long faced challenges in accessing specialized medical care, can now look forward to innovative treatments and improved health outcomes.

In the coming months, the hospital plans to enhance its facilities further and attract top medical talent, solidifying its position as a leader in regional healthcare. The first spine surgery did not only set a new benchmark for orthopedic care but also reinforced the institution’s mission to provide exemplary healthcare services to the people of Surigao del Sur.
