TUPAD extends support to Agusan Sur’s transport sector
AGUSAN DEL SUR -- In response to the growing concerns within the transport sector in Agusan del Sur due to the implementation of the Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) Modernization Program, the Department of Labor and Employment - Agusan del Sur Field Office (DOLE-ADSFO) implemented its emergency employment program through the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD) across the municipalities of Loreto, Talacogon, and San Francisco.
A total of 669 beneficiaries, including members of the Tricycle Owner-Drivers Association and habal-habal drivers, received P3,850 each in salaries for their 10-day employment under the TUPAD program. These beneficiaries, who are significantly affected by the PUV Modernization Program, an initiative aimed at upgrading jeepneys, buses, and other PUVs, found TUPAD to be a lifeline, providing both financial relief and temporary employment as they navigate these challenging transitions.
The program's implementation was made possible through coordination with the Drivers United for Mass Progress and Equal Rights – Philippines Taxi Drivers Association (DUMPER PTDA), also known as the DUMPER Partylist.
Dominggo Dela Rosa Jr., a TUPAD beneficiary from Loreto, expressed his gratitude, stating, "This is a great help for us drivers, especially in these difficult times when making a living from driving has become harder. We are thankful to be prioritized in this TUPAD program, especially now that we are facing the challenges of the modernization program."
Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Provincial Head of DOLE-Agusan del Sur Buhawe B. Corvera-Correa acknowledged the critical role of these workers in the economy, stating, "We recognize the importance of these workers in sustaining our economy. As they adapt to the demands of modernization, DOLE hopes that the TUPAD program has provided meaningful assistance."
DOLE-Agusan del Sur continues its commitment to supporting the transport sector and other vulnerable groups through targeted initiatives like TUPAD, aiming to mitigate the impacts of economic challenges and ensure the welfare of all Agsurnons. (DOLE-ADSFO/PIA-Agusan del Sur)
