Port of Surigao makes historic bid for prestigious global award

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte --The port of Surigao's "Green Port Initiatives" project has been selected as a finalist for the prestigious 2024 Sustainability Awards of the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) as the leading global organization representing the world's port industry.

This historic moment marked the first time a Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) port reached the finals of this renowned competition, often referred to as the "ports Oscars." The IAPH Sustainability Awards celebrates the highest quality port-sustainability projects from around the world, as submitted to the World Port Sustainability Program (WPSP) database.

The Port of Surigao's "Green Port Initiatives" project is one of the top three finalists in the Environmental Care Category, competing alongside industry heavyweights like the Port of Antwerp-Bruges and the Lyttelton Port Company.

"This is a proud moment for the Philippine Ports Authority and the Port of Surigao," said PPA Port Management Office (PMO) of Surigao Port Manager Froilan Caturla

"Being recognized among the global leaders in sustainable port development only proves our commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation," he added.

The public is now invited to participate in the final voting process, which will contribute 30% to the overall decision. From September 2-13, voters can access the voting portal at the IAPH's World Port Sustainability Program website and cast their ballots for their preferred projects across six categories namely,  digitalization, climate and energy, community building, health safety and security, infrastructure, and environmental care.

The voting portal for the IAPH 2024 Sustainability Awards is accessible through this link: https://sustainableworldports.org/iaph2024-sustainability-awards.

The voting also observes the following important details: (1) Each person is only allowed to cast one vote. You cannot vote multiple times; (2) When you vote, you must select a candidate for all six award categories. You cannot skip any categories; (3) After you submit your ballot, you will need to verify your vote by clicking a confirmation link sent to the email address you provide.

This verification step is required. “We encourage everyone to visit the voting portal and support the Port of Surigao's 'Green Port Initiatives' project," Caturla emphasized.

The final winners of the 2024 IAPH Sustainability Awards will be announced at the Gala dinner of the World Ports Conference in Hamburg, Germany, on 09 October 2024. (PPA-PMO Surigao/PIA-Surigao del Norte)
