DTI-13 advocates on fair, responsible use of AI

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Caraga, together with the different consumer-oriented agencies, business organizations, consumer organizations, academe, students, senior citizens associations, and empowered consumers, celebrated the World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) on March 15, with this year’s theme, “Fair and Responsible AI for Consumers.”

The celebration manifested a significant shift from sustainable production and consumption to protection and promotion of consumer interests, especially in the emerging use of artificial intelligence (AI) through the internet.

“While generative AI has provided cheap and affordable access to data and information, consumers should still be vigilant and mindful of the accuracy, trustworthiness, and privacy-safety in the use of this digital information,” said Atty. Kurt Chino Montero, chief of DTI Caraga Consumer Protection Division.

Further, DTI Caraga field offices conducted simultaneous information education and communication (IEC) activities involving topics on consumerism, such as detection of investment scams whether physical or online, the salient provisions of Republic Act No. 11967 or the Internet Transactions Act, rules on service and repair enterprises, Standards Law, and prices of basic necessities.

Consumer organizations such as Dinagatnong Konsumador, San Jose Kapit-Bisig ng mga Taong may Kapansanan, Konsumador Hong Butuan, Surigao del Norte Consumer’s Organization took part in the celebration.

Representatives and students of the Marine Merchant Academy, and the Information and Technology Division of Caraga State University also participated in the convergence. While the PNP - Anti CyberCrime Unit provided necessary technical inputs. (DTI-Caraga/PIA-Caraga)
