Population council marks 55th anniversary

BUENAVISTA, Agusan del Norte -- The Commission on Population and Development (CPD) is gearing up for a grand celebration in honor of its 55th anniversary, commemorating the historic creation through Executive Order No. 171, series of 1969.

With the theme, “Empowering Filipino Families and Communities amidst Demographic Change,” the agency is set to reflect on its remarkable journey and the transformative impact it made on the Filipino population.

As part of the anniversary festivities, CPD officials are emphasizing the significance of this milestone celebration as an opportunity to showcase the agency's dedication to fostering positive demographic changes and enhancing the well-being of Filipino families and communities. The commemoration will shed light on the agency's achievements in implementing strategic population and development initiatives over the past five decades.

A central focus of the celebration is the promotion of the newly approved Philippine Population and Development Plan of Action 2023-2028 (PPD-POA), with an overarching goal "to optimize demographic opportunities and address persistent population issues and challenges to reap demographic dividends and accelerate sustainable and inclusive development at all levels."

CPD Caraga, in line with the national directive, has developed and launched its Regional Population and Development Plan of Action (RPD-POA) and Strategic Communication Plan for 2023-2028. These regional documents have been officially adopted by the Regional Population Executive Board of Caraga (RPEB-Caraga), composed of regional and local program partners, during its 4th quarter 2023 conference.

The CPD is leaving no stone unturned to maintain the population and development (POPDEV) agenda within public consciousness. The agency is actively engaging in cost-efficient promotional activities at both national and regional levels, collaborating closely with local government units through its network of dedicated local population officers.

Some of the promotional activities include showcasing historical milestones, success stories, and the transformative impact on Filipinos through various social media platforms. By leveraging these platforms, CPD aims to raise awareness and ensure that the importance of population and development issues remains at the forefront of public discourse.

As CPD celebrates its 55th anniversary, the agency remains steadfast in its commitment to empower Filipino families and communities, steering the nation towards a future marked by sustainable and inclusive development. (May Ann O. Escobal, CPD-Caraga/PIA-Caraga)
