SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte  (PIA) --The Department of Science and Technology - Surigao del Norte has successfully conducted the Technology Training on Gemstone Processing and Product Development for fashion accessories and souvenir items from  July 27 to 28, 2022 held in Barangay Ombong, Alegria, this province.

The conduct of the said training is in collaboration with the DOST - Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC).

The main objective of the two-day technology training is to provide sustainable livelihood opportunity for the Cutom Mamanwa Tribal Organization (CUMATO) through the precious and semi-precious gemstone minerals available in the locality.

The project was initiated by the organization spearheaded by its President, Mr. Edgar S. Tabacon, in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and LGU-Alegria thru its Municipal Tourism Office.

Engr. Francisco C. Dime, gemstone processing expert from DOST-MIRDC, imparted his knowledge on how to identify precious and semi-precious gemstones.

He further discussed different gemstone processes and its applications.

Together with Mr. Alfred M. Tujon, welding technician from DOST-MIRDC, Engr. Dime demonstrated the operation of equipment provided by DOLE through its DOLE Kabuhayan Program.

The technologies granted include the slabbing and grinding machine, ultrasonic drilling machine, vibratory tumbler, polishing machine, and gemstone faceting machine.

During the training, all participants were able to experience hands-on operation of the equipment and produced polished cabochon and faceted gems with variety of shapes and sizes. These quality products of cabochon and faceted gems can be used as inlays for rings, earrings, bracelets/bangles, necklaces, and other accessories.

The members of the Cutom Mamanwa Tribal Organization (CUMATO) expressed their gratitude and appreciation for the knowledge and skills they gained through the capacity building activity.
