DOST-Caraga steps up preparation for this year’s Mindanao Cluster S & T Fair

BUTUAN CITY, Oct. 14 (PIA) – The Department of Science of Technology (DOST) Caraga is stepping up its preparations for this year’s Mindanao Cluster Science and Technology (S&T) Fair on November 6-10, 2013 at the Almont Hotel’s Inland Resort, this city.

DOST-Caraga OIC Regional Director Dominga Mallonga said the five-day event will showcase the products of DOST-assisted projects from six regions in Mindanao and the various programs and services of the DOST Councils and Institutes.

“There will be a fora on various technologies to be participated by our program beneficiaries, line agencies and partners from the private sectors which support the DOST’s S & T initiatives in improving the productivity of SMEs in the region,” added Mallonga.

It was also learned that back to back to this activity is the conduct of the 2013 Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (RICE) with the theme “Invention and Innovation for Smarter Philippines.

The contest is a competition open to inventors and researchers from both public and private sectors who are interested to participate under the following categories: Invention Category (Tuklas Award), Utility Model Category, Industrial Design Category, Creative Research Category, all under the Likha Award and Student Creative Research Category for High School and College Students under the Sibol Award.

Over nutrition is a serious health concern, says DOH-Caraga

BUTUAN CITY, Oct. 14 (PIA) – The Department of Health (DOH) Caraga emphasized during a recent media forum that over nutrition (overweight/obesity) is a serious health concern especially in the light of its strong association with the development of non-communicable diseases specifically cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes mellitus, and chronic respiratory diseases.

Delma O. Legaspi, registered nurse and Healthy Lifestyle & Non-Communicable Disease Coordinator of DOH-Caraga, bared that among the health risks associated with obesity include the following: Cancer, Reproductive hormone abnormalities, Polycystic ovary syndrome, impaired fertility, low back pain, fetal defects associated with maternal obesity, coronary heart disease, hypertension, osteoarthritis, Hyperurecemia and gout, Type II Diabetes, Gallbladder diseases, Dyslipidemia, breathlessness, and sleep apnea.

“Let’s be conscious of our health. Let’s eat a healthy diet by following these tips: eat just enough fats, oils and sugar; eat moderately animal foods, dried beans and nuts; eat more vegetables and fruits; and eat most rice and other cereals, bread and rootcrops,” she said.

Legaspi further said that other ways of preventing over nutrition and obesity such as: remove additives like MSG and lessen Sodium and Sugar in cooking; offer a healthier menu – fresh fruits instead of pastries; and offices should provide a short break in the morning to give those who missed out on breakfast a chance to grab a quick meal.

Bayugan City Poblacion officials get village updates

AGUSAN DEL SUR, Oct. 14 (PIA) - Officials and residents of Barangay (village) Poblacion in Bayugan City gathered last Sunday, Oct. 13 for the second Barangay General Assembly for this year.

The Local Government Code mandates all the local government units to conduct their own barangay general assembly to discuss the problems and projects for the community. The barangay conducted its first General Assembly last April, 2013.

The program started with a welcome address by Barangay councilor Henry C. Buque.  Barangay chairman Kim A. Asis then reported to his constituents the various projects implemented by the council from health, economic development, infrastructure projects to four public schools, medical and burial Sservices.

During the open forum, purok presidents suggested various projects and programs to be implemented with the approval of the Barangay Council.  Also, issues on drugs, garbage collection and disposal, among others were raised. Chairman Asis then thanked all his constituents who attended the event.

To date, Barangay Poblacion is one of the most populous barangays in the province. According to Barangay Secretary Maria Estela T. Paring, Barangay Poblacion has a total of 19, 849 population and subdivided in 30 Puroks. (PIA-Caraga)


Surigao City Prosecutors Office bares second, third quarter accomplishments

SURIGAO CITY, Oct. 14 (PIA) – The City Prosecutors Office here unveiled recently its second and third quarter accomplishment report for 2013 during the flag raising ceremony held at the City Hall Compound, this city.

Anecita N. Escudo, Administrative Officer V of the City Prosecutor Office revealed that cases received by their office for criminal complaints of different offenses for preliminary investigations or regular cases reached a total of 310, and another 123 for inquest cases, with a total of 433 cases for the second and third quarter of this year.

Out of 433 cases, the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 had the most numbered with 42 cases and followed by 41 cases for Theft and Robbery.

Escudo said that for the pending cases of the 1st quarter of 2013, their office recorded 93 regular cases for preliminary investigation and 8 inquest cases for further investigation. There were 211 cases filed in the court and 108 both regular and inquest cases were dismissed for insufficient evidence.

With regards to Fiscal’s Clearance and Administration Oath of Office, a total of 863 litigants were served and provided speedy legal services for various legal counseling and documents for any legal purposes.

“The four prosecutors of our office  handled a total of 1,176 various criminal cases before Municipal Trial Courts and Regional Trial Courts. There were 53 accused that were found guilty beyond reasonable doubt and were convicted to suffer imprisonments and/or fines. Justice was served to those victims,” Escudo said.

The City Prosecutor’s Office is the duly authorized representative of the Office of the Solicitor General in the 49 Specials Proceedings cases, such as declaration of nullity of marriage, correction of entries, adoption, land cases and other civil cases.
