Elderly Filipino Week celeb kicks-off today in
Butuan

BUTUAN CITY, Oct. 1 (PIA) -- Marking the opening
ceremony of this year’s Elderly Filipino Week celebration, the senior citizens
here participated in the "Jog-for-Health" and ‘Hataw’ exercise at
5:30 this morning.
Office for Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA)-Butuan
City chief Imelda Nonan encouraged the senior citizens who participated in
today's kick-off ceremony to participate also during the culmination on October
6 with different activities for them.
“Today, there are 1,162 senior citizens who
joined the Jog for Health & Hataw exercise activity at the Guingona Park…
We hope to see you all again tomorrow for the free medical mission and on
October 6 for the culmination program to be held at the Agusan del Norte Provincial
Covered Court. You will be given senior citizen t-shirts,” said Nonan.
Butuan City Administrator Leah Mendoza
emphasized to all the participating senior citizens that age is only in the
mind.
"We should not say that we are getting
older and weaker because of our age. Instead, we should think that we can still
be healthy and happy and we can still do the things we want to do," she
said.
On behalf of Butuan City Mayor Ferdinand Amante
Jr, City Administrator Mendoza relayed his message saying that the ward for the
senior citizens at the Butuan Medical Center is now completed and a Senior
Citizens Center will also be put-up at the back of the city library.
“The quarterly social pension of the senior
citizens amounting to P1,500 is a lifetime benefit for them provided by the
government,” Mendoza said.
Mendoza added that Mayor Amante is strengthening
the Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation of Eye Care Program for the senior
citizens, which is free of charge.
Pursuant to Presidential Proclamation no. 470,
October 1-7 is declared as "Elderly Filipino Week" which aims to
promote public awareness of the rights and well-being of elderly people in the
