PIA-Caraga, RMN-Butuan to conduct bloodletting activity in Butuan on Sunday

BUTUAN CITY, August 23 (PIA) -- With the increasing number of dengue cases in many parts of the country, the regional office of the Philippine Information Agency in Caraga has partnered with Radio Mindanao Network (RMN) – dxBC Butuan in the conduct of bloodletting activity on Sunday. This is part of the corporate social responsibility of one of the oldest radio stations here in the city.

In a phone-patch interview with PIA, Sasie Abastas-Babar, News Director of RMN-dxBC Butuan said the activity is in time with the 59th anniversary celebration of RMN nationwide.

Abastas also said the medical-dental mission is also their way of thanking the people of Butuan and the neighboring provinces for making RMN one of the most-listened radio stations in the city.

Other services to be conducted in the whole-day activity include a jobs fair, blood sugar test, free massage, and giving of free medicines.

The activity is sponsored by Butuan City Vice-Mayor Lawrence Lemuel Fortun, 402nd Brigade of the Philippine Army, and Philippine National Police (PNP) PRO-13, among others.

Meanwhile, the region’s Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) will also sponsor a mass feeding during the activity. (RER/PIA-Caraga)


Gov. Amante graces Veterans Bank’s traveling exhibit

BUTUAN CITY, Aug. 23 (PIA) – Agusan del Norte Gov. Erlpe John Amante graced recently the traveling exhibit in an effort to instill awareness of the Butuanons of this generation the sacrifices and gallant deeds of our forefathers.

Anchored on the theme “War of Our Fathers…A Tribute to the Filipino Freedom Fighters", the activity is spearheaded by the Philippine Veterans Bank, a private commercial bank that is owned by Filipino World War II Veterans.

Gov. Amante, in his speech emphasized the bravery of the Filipino forefathers especially here in the city when they fought and risk their lives to protect and defend the region that was formerly composed of only two provinces: Agusan and Surigao.

The chief executive of the province cut the ceremonial ribbon signaling the opening the said exhibit together with high ranking officials of the Philippine Veterans Bank, Department of Education (DepEd), socio-civic organizations and other high ranking government officials.

Also, Mr. Ricardo A. Balbido Jr., President and CEO of the Philippine Veterans Bank expressed his thanks and appreciation to the efforts of the veterans after he witnessed the dramatic stories of the World War II heroes with their 42 panels’ display of wartime photos, artifacts, documents and video presentations.

DPWH eyes better roadside management in Siargao Island

DAPA, Surigao del Norte, August 23 (PIA) -- In an effort to help prolong the service life of infrastructure facilities in Siargao Island, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has enhanced the currently implemented CY2011 roadside maintenance program for better roadside management.

Maintenance Section Chief Engineer Quintiniano C. Armendarez said the District Engineering Office has hired workers on job-order basis as augmentation workforce to the regular maintenance crew.

“Roadside workers are deployed in various national road sites that link the 8 municipalities of mainland Siargao to do the actual works,” Armendarez said.

Roadside and carriageway maintenance activities involve the cutting of vegetation along shoulders up to the road right-of-way, clearing of sidewalks, desilting of drainage canals, longitudinal pipes and cross drains, manual pothole patching and manual reshaping of gravel shoulders and carriageway. 1st Caraga Mining Sympo, safety competition, a resounding success

BUTUAN CITY, August 23 (PIA) -- The recently concluded 1st Caraga Mining Symposium and Safety Competition in Surigao City was a resounding success, according to a government agency. The symposium had for its theme “Responsible Mining: Key to Caraga’s Economic Growth and Sustainable Development.”

In a press statement Regional Office of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) said the safety competition on Friday showcased mine rescue, fire brigade, and the first aid competencies of the participating mining companies held at the Surigao City National High School.

Said competition exhibited the adeptness of the participants at responding to safety issues in anticipation of the unforeseen circumstances that may beset the mining operations.

Meanwhile, the Plenary and Technical Symposium featured substantial topics, issues, and discussions in relation to the manifold dimensions of mining and its significant contribution to economic growth.

Noted government officials as well as several partners and colleagues from the mining industry and society graced the event and delivered lectures.

At the Hotel Tavern, a variety of booth display and exhibits featuring several mining companies were launched for public viewing.

The singular event culminated in a recognition ceremony where winners of the Safety Competition were awarded.
Also, the ceremony recognized the invaluable contributions of the guests of honors, resource speakers, participants, and organizers to the success of the event.

OWWA-Caraga launches “Operation Syria Libreng Tawag”

BUTUAN CITY, August 23 (PIA) -- The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Regional Office 13 on Monday launched “Operation Syria Libreng Tawag” to provide immediate assistance to families of OFWs in Syria.

Per record, there are only five (5) Caraganon OFWs in Syria that are members of OWWA. However, to safeguard the welfare of all Overseas Filipino Workers, even those who are not members are to be given the access to avail the free call.

It is expected that through the Operation Syria Libreng Tawag concerns of families regarding the OFW’s whereabouts and condition will be easily made known giving instant relief to the affected families.

Moreover, OWWA Administrator Carmelita Dimzon stated that the Philippine Embassy in Syria is having active communication with the Filipino community leaders of the said country. The embassy is also ready to assist OFWs who want to come home. The Philippine Government will provide for the repatriation cost, it was learned.
