RH Bill fora steered

by Rutchie C. Saluta

BUTUAN CITY, June 30
– Support to the proposed Reproductive Health Bill was gained after a series of forum was initiated recently in the key cities of Caraga Region.

In the latest forum sponsored by the Philippine NGO Council (PNGOC) through the Surigao del Norte NGO Coalition for Development (SUNGCOD) conducted last June 24 in Surigao City, a manifesto supporting the RH Bill came out from an estimated 350 attendees. Commission on Population (POPCOM) Executive Director Tomas M. Osias graced the occasion together with Gabriela representative Luz Ilagan and Agham representative Angelo B. Palmones.

In Tandag City, POPCOM Regional Director Camilo S. Pangan also met the population program advocates of the entire province of Surigao del Sur to consult them directly and clarify issues related to the proposed bill. Same forum was conducted to the population officers and workers of Surigao del Norte, Surigao City, and Dinagat Islands.

“Meeting our local partners is really a necessity so that everyone in the organization is able to address clarifications when asked in their respective communities”, Pangan said.

It can be recalled that early this month, POPCOM in coordination with the Regional Development Council-Gender and Development Coordinating Committee (GADCC) also organized a forum held in Almont Inland Resort, this city.

The organizers said that the pre and post survey that was filled up by the participants showed a favorable support to the proposed RH Bill.

Speakers on the pro-RH were Akbayan partylist spokesperson Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel and Dr. Telly Somera representing the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines on the anti-RH side. Another guest who spoke in favor of RH bill was Loreta Ann Rosales, Chairperson on the Commission on Human Rights .

The forum, organized in two batches, were attended by various sectors of the society to include the Roman Catholic church priests, nuns and lay leaders, representatives of government agencies and non-government organizations. About 400 attendees in the 1st batch and 450 in the 2nd batch were recorded. The presence of Bishop Juan de Dios Pueblos of Butuan City was also noted.

Pangan emphasized that all these endeavors are hoped to clarify confusions and a lot of speculations regarding the proposed bill. (POPCOM-Caraga/PIA-Caraga)

Surigao Norte gov leads blessing of Nursery Operation Center, MENRO in Alegria

by Edipolo Mosquito

SURIGAO DEL NORTE, June 30 -– In support to the national program of President Benigno Aquino’s “Plant a Billion Tree Project,” Gov. Sol Matugas of this province, along with Alegria Mayor Dominador Esma, Jr. led the blessing and cutting of ribbons to the newly constructed Nursery Operation Center and Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) on Wednesday, June 29 this town.

Matugas acknowledged the initiative of the local government unit (LGU) in protecting the local environment.

According to Mayor Esma, the LGU will provide seedlings to 12 barangays of the town at 25,000 per barangay starting this year up to 2016.

In a related development, Gov. Matugas also led the launching of Rice Duck Farming (RDF) to eight (8) cooperators of the town yesterday at 150 ducks per hectare under the Phil. Agrarian Reform Fund (PARFund).

Surigao del Sur drops out from 20 poorest provinces

by Greg Tataro, Jr.

TANDAG CITY, Surigao del Sur, June 30 (PIA)
-– The province of Surigao del Sur is no longer included in the so-called Club 20 of the poorest provinces in the country.

According to National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA)-Caraga Regional Director Carmencita Cochingco, “Surigao del Sur has increasingly uplifted itself as incidence of poverty has gone down after it was consistently included in the list for the last nine (9) years.”

Ironically, she admitted, Caraga Region is the poorest Region so far “as Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Norte have yet to bail themselves out.”

The present economic status of Surigao del Sur was attributed to the joint effort of the Local Government Units (LGUs) here that was said to be “paying off”.

Cochingco shared this information during her message at the ACF-AECID project turned-over in Surigao del Sur on June 28. (Radyo ng Bayan Tandag/PIA Surigao del Sur)

Tagalog News: PIDSR software, ginagamit ng Agusan del Norte PESU

ni Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY, Hunyo 30 (PIA)

(PIA-Caraga)
