Caraga Region is free from fish kill - BFAR

by Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY, June 6 (PIA) – With some provinces in Luzon affected with fishkill, the Regional Office of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) confirmed recently that Caraga Region is free from the fish die off.

According to an official from BFAR-Caraga, as of press time, the coastal waters in the region are free from fish kill.

However, the official said, although the entire region is free from fish mortality, “we should not be complacent about it because like the other provinces in Luzon like Batangas and Pangasinan, there is still a possibility that it will affect Caraga Region and any region in the country,” the official said.

The official further said fishers should coordinate with their respective local government units so that they will be guided on what to do so that their marine products will not be put to waste especially the bangus, tilapia and shrimp products.

The official explained that all technological concepts on aquaculture is nothing without the coordination and cooperation among the stakeholders – public and private alike.

“It is more important that everybody should do their share so that we will be prepared for any problems in the production of these marine products,” the official said.

Report on Sunday revealed that a new fish kill has hit Taal Lake in two towns and a city in Batangas, just hours after authorities had cleared one side of Taal Lake of rotting fish.

At least 20 metric tons of “bangus” (milkfish) and tilapia, which were grown in fish cages, and a ton of fish varieties endemic to the lake were lost in the latest fishkill that hit the lake’s water along the towns of Mataas na Kahoy and Cuenca and the City of Lipa. (PIA-Caraga)

Akbayan inks MOA with provincial gov't

by Jay Vincent V. Demain

AGUSAN DEL NORTE, June 6 – The Akbayan Citizen's Action Party-list recently signed a memorandum of agreement with the provincial government of Agusan del Norte that would provide financial help to poor patients in the provincial hospital.

Akbayan pledged P200, 000 under its medical assistance program to help address the needs of patients in the provincial hospital who could not afford of medical treatments.

The medical assistance is for in-patients, out-patients, and emergency patients. It covers medicines, laboratory diagnostic procedures, therapeutic modalities, and professional fees.

Cash assistance to patients, however, is not allowed under this program.

According to local officials here, the party list group’s financial aid to the province is a welcome development since most of the patients admitted in its hospital belong to low income families relying only on discounts and privileges offered by the hospital. Assistance coming from any source would be very helpful especially that the number of patients who choose to be admitted in this 99 year-old hospital is increasing.

Founded in 1911, the hospital continues to fulfill its mission of providing affordable, equitable, accessible, and quality health care for all.

Board Member Ernie M. Ceniza, also Project Development Officer of Akbayan-Agusan del Norte, said that this endeavor is the group’s way of extending support to the people of Agusan.

Governor Erlpe John M. Amante in 2005 started a program dubbed as “Adopt-A-Hospital-Room Program” to further improve the hospital’s services to the public. Governor Amante’s effort paved the way for the present condition of its wards and facilities which have significantly improved.

In 2008, it also received P18 million-peso medical supplies and equipment from Medical Bridges, a non-government organization based in Houston, Texas, U.S.A.

And in the same year, a Mobile Hospital, a first in Caraga region, began to reach out to patients living in the outskirts of the province.

“With its Special allocation Release Order (SARO) No. G-10-05856, the said fund is intended to provide medical assistance especially for the underprivileged patients admitted or for admission at the ADNPH,” Board Member Ceniza stressed out.

Akbayan is a registered national political party representing marginalized sectors in the Philippines. The group seeks to intervene in the areas of governance, electoral exercise, advocacy and reform to pursue its main goal of instituting greater participation in public decision-making.
