Authorities launch coordinated enforcement of immigration law on Siargao Island

By Susil D. Ragas

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte (PIA)  In a decisive move to uphold national immigration laws, and preserve public safety, in the country’s premier surfing capital, Siargao Island, the operatives from the Bureau of Immigration (BI), in close coordination with the General Luna Municipal Police Station (MPS), launched a synchronized enforcement operation on June 26 in the municipality of General Luna.

The synchronized operation was launched following a mission order officially issued by the BI Commissioner for a strategic ‘clean-up drive’ that resulted in the apprehension of 10 foreigners on Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte.

According to the BI, the arrested individuals committed “severe” infractions of Philippine immigration laws, such as prior involvement in criminal or disruptive activities; overstaying or expiring visas and lack of proper documentation; and illegal employment or engaging in gainful commercial activities without the required alien employment permits.

The arrested foreigners, including four Israelis, two Chinese, one Lithuanian, one Australian, one Moroccan, and one Nigerian, are temporarily held under strict custody of the General Luna MPS pending their transfer to the appropriate BI detention facility. The Bureau of Immigration handled the filing of and deportation proceedings.

Meanwhile, Surigao del Norte Governor Robert Lyndon S. Barbers highly praised the Bureau of Immigration and the Philippine National Police for their swift and coordinated joint operation that resulted in the apprehension of 10 foreigners.

“Siargao Island remains a welcoming destination for global and local tourists. However, hospitality does not mean leniency. All visitors must respect and adhere to Philippine laws,” the governor said.

He called upon residents, business owners, and tourists to actively cooperate in maintaining the peace, order, and the island’s security.

“It is a collective duty to protect Siargao Island’s environment, culture, and safety to ensure it remains a pristine and secure destination for future generations,” he added. “The recent joint crackdown operation targeting illegal foreign nationals in Siargao Island has sparked widespread relief and optimism among the residents of General Luna.”

For many local business owners, the operation is seen as a necessary step to level the playing field.

Residents have expressed relief that unregistered, foreign-owned businesses operating without proper visas or tax compliance are being checked. This protects local entrepreneurs, tour guides, and legitimate homestay owners from unfair competition.

Locals feel reassured that jobs meant for Filipinos—such as surfing instructors, hospitality staff, and local transport operators—are being safeguarded.

Amado, a resident and local business owner, said, “While Siargao Island is famous for its welcoming, laid-back vibe, residents emphasize that sustainable tourism relies on law and order.”

He said that enforcing immigration laws ensures the island attracts respectful, law-abiding tourists and investors who contribute positively to the local economy, and the crackdown has reinforced a sense of security among families in General Luna, proving that the island remains a safe environment for both locals and international visitors.

“We love welcoming people from all over the world to Cloud 9, but everyone needs to respect our laws. This crackdown shows that our government is serious about protecting both the beauty of Siargao and the livelihood of the people who actually live here.” Amado added.
