SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte (PIA) - The Department of Trade and Industry-Surigao del Norte (DTI-SDN), through the Negosyo Center Mainit, recently partnered with Surigao del Norte State University (SNSU) Mainit campus, hosted a transformative workshop dubbed “From Harvest To Innovation: Creating Novel Food Products Utilizing Local Crops.”
Held on December 10, the event provided Bachelor of Science in Agroforestry (BSAF) students with a platform to bridge the gap between classroom theory and commercial application, bridging academic knowledge and market reality.
The workshop targeted students specializing in Post-Harvest Technology and Crop Processing. By focusing on value addition, the initiative supports DTI’s mission to foster an entrepreneurial mindset within the agricultural sector.
Technical experts from DTI-SDN, Ninebeth R. Balighot, and Ma. Malen C. Galela led the sessions, covering three pillars of product success: Food Innovation–techniques in turning raw local crops into high-value products; Strategic Packaging–design strategies to enhance shelf life and consumer appeal; and Compliant Labeling–navigating regulatory standards to ensure products are market-ready.
The highlight of the day was a hands-on session where students developed and presented their own novel food products. These creations were evaluated by DTI experts, providing students with professional feedback on their potential in the sector.
DTI Surigao del Norte Director Arnold Faelnar said, “This collaboration exemplifies a ‘whole-of-government’ approach, ensuring that our graduates are not just job seekers, but future job creators who can drive the local economy.”
”DTI-SDN and SNSU-Mainit remain dedicated to empowering the youth of Surigao del Norte,” Dir. Faelnar added. “By equipping students with the tools to innovate, this partnership ensures that the province’s agricultural outputs contribute directly to sustainable economic growth and a robust MSME sector.”
On behalf of the participants, Adamson expressed his sincere gratitude for the opportunity to attend such a transformative program. “The sessions on modern agricultural techniques and business innovation have provided us with a fresh perspective on the Agri-preneurship landscape. We particularly valued the insights into market linking or digital branding, which have equipped us with the practical tools necessary to turn our ideas into viable enterprises.”
”Thank you for investing in the next generation of agricultural leaders. We look forward to applying these lessons to contribute to our local economy,” Adamson added. (SDR, PIA Surigao del Norte with a report from DTI-SDN)
