By Susil D. Ragas

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte (PIA) — The Department of Tourism (DOT) Caraga conducted a two-day training to advance inclusive tourism skills and efforts in the country’s premiere tourism destination, Siargao Island.

Held in General Luna town in Surigao del Norte, the November 17–18 activity significantly strengthened the capacity of local stakeholders to provide inclusive services, especially in guiding and assisting tourists with special needs.

At least 31 tourism frontliners and accommodation owners participated in the intensive session focused on providing safe and respectful services to guests with disabilities.

Led by DOT Resource Person Rizalio R. Sanchez, the training covered essential skills, including proper etiquette for persons with disabilities (PWDs), sighted guide techniques, assisting guests with mobility and physical disabilities, effective communication with (deaf and hard-of-hearing and hearing impaired guests), and inclusive disaster preparedness for PWD safety.

Insights on child-safe tourism were also provided by DOT Caraga GAD Tourism Works Focal Person Alyckssa Mae J. Castaños, stressing the role of establishments in child protection.

Meanwhile, one of the participants, Phil, a tour guide said, “The training has deepened my commitment to ensuring that everyone who visits our beautiful island gets to experience its magic fully and comfortably. I am now better equipped to provide tailored and thoughtful assistance, ensuring a safe, enjoyable, and unforgettable tour for guests of all abilities.”

DOT Caraga expresses its heartfelt gratitude to the local government of General Luna for its unwavering commitment and continuous support on capacity-building initiatives that enhance the quality of tourism services in the island.

This strong partnership ensures that Siargao Island remains a warm, welcoming, and inclusive destination for all travelers. (SDR, PIA Surigao del Norte with a report from DOT Caraga)
