DTRC Caraga highlights mental health in drug rehab efforts

By Mariesh F. Celedeña

BUTUAN CITY (PIA)  The Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Center (DTRC) Caraga does not only advocate for drug treatment, but also for mental health because the use of illegal drugs can destroy one’s mental health and well-being.

Jayvee C. Lao, nurse I of the  DTRC Caraga, said during Kapihan sa PIA on November 12 at SM City Butuan, Butuan City.

“Psychological services form an essential part of rehabilitation since drug use directly affects the brain and overall mental functioning of persons who use drugs (PWUDs),” Lao said. “The treatment includes counseling sessions, detoxification and medical stabilization, spiritual and recreational activities, mental health assessment and treatment, relapse prevention strategy skills, therapies, among  others.”

Accordingly, the 100-bed capacity Surigao City-based DTRC Caraga facility implements a multidisciplinary approach in addressing drug dependency, with the combined efforts of doctors, nurses, and other allied professionals to ensure holistic treatment and rehabilitation for the patients.

There are three classifications or levels of drug abuse and dependence: mild, moderate, and severe. By virtue of a court order, patients who are examined as moderate to severe are admitted to the treatment and rehabilitation facility.

PWUDs may be admitted to the center either voluntarily or mandatorily. Voluntary admission applies to recovering drug dependents who are endorsed by their family members. In contrast, mandatory admission applies to individuals who have committed a crime and are required by the court to undergo treatment for six to 12 months, and the aftercare program.  (MFC, PIA Caraga)
