Port of Surigao remains safe, unscathed by strong quakes

By Susil D. Ragas

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte (PIA)  The Surigao  port operations were unaffected by the magnitude 7.4 quake, including the succeeding quakes and aftershocks, as confirmed by Philippine Ports Authority – Port Management Office (PPA-PMO) Surigao.

PPA-PMO Surigao Manager Froilan Caturla confirmed that the Surigao Port remains  safe and  emerges completely undamaged following the series of earthquakes that recently struck Mindanao with tremors that reached Caraga region. “Although no structural damage to facilities, we assure the public, especially our clientele that the port authorities are continuing to monitor for aftershocks for the safety of all travelling passengers.”

This assessment provided a significant reassurance, stating that the port’s infrastructure, including its wharves, terminal buildings, and operational areas, sustained zero damage from the intense seismic activity.

Meanwhile, Alberto, a port worker, expressed a deep sense of relief on the quick and positive response by the personnel of the PPA-PMO Surigao for their involvement in the coordinated safety structural assessment for the safety of all port workers as well as the travelling passengers. “This swift confirmation means that cargo and passenger operations at Surigao Port were never halted and continue to proceed normally.”

The port’s resilience ensures that vital sea links for trade and travel remain fully functional, playing a critical role in the region’s overall recovery and relief efforts following the quake.

The structural integrity of the facility allowed PMO Surigao to maintain continuous service, underscoring the success of its engineering standards in mitigating the effects of major natural disasters. (SDR, PIA Surigao del Norte with a report from PPA-PMO Surigao)
