LGU San Miguel, Surigao Sur sustains fight vs illegal drugs

By Mariesh F. Celedeña

BUTUAN CITY (PIA) “The local government of San Miguel in Surigao del Sur sustains its fight against illegal drugs,” said Shiela R. Buniel, executive consultant of the LGU.

During the ‘Panagtigum sa Barangay’ or gathering in the barangay held in Magroyong, San Miguel, Surigao del Sur, Buniel underscored the municipal government’s strong commitment to upholding peace and order, and public safety, highlighting it as a key component of the LGU’s 10-point agenda.

“The LGU continuously collaborates with the barangays, police, and communities to combat illegal drugs and sustain drug-cleared and drug-free barangays,” she added.

Buniel noted that the LGU has been implementing various interventions and diversion programs such as sports clinics, basketball tournaments, trainings, symposiums, and information campaigns to steer the youth and San Miguelnons away from illegal drugs.

She stressed that it is important to steer the youth away from illegal drugs because the LGU believes in the importance of the lives of the youth. Instilling to their young minds of the negative effect of drugs.

The illegal use of drugs is closely linked to the incidence of crime. Lower number of drug related incidents results in a decrease in crime within the municipality. On the other hand, a higher number of drug cases leads to an increase in the crime rate.

Buniel also shared that the municipality is currently implementing programs that encourage teen and youth participation, particularly through sports and recreational activities to promote a healthy and drug-free lifestyle. (MFC, PIA Caraga)
