DA turns over P1.2-M chicken module project to Cabadbaran cooperative

By Nora L. Molde

BUTUAN CITY (PIA) —Brighter opportunities are hatching for the members of the Manhon Agriculture Cooperative (MACO) in Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte as the Department of Agriculture (DA) Caraga turned over a P2.1 million ready-to-lay (RTL) chicken module project.

This support came under the Livestock Economic Enterprise Development (LEED) Program of the DA’s National Livestock Program which provided grant-based livelihood assistance to farmers and livestock raisers across the region to uplift livelihood and strengthen local food security.

With 1,000 RTL chickens, complete housing facilities, feeds, and veterinary supplies, the project promises to boost egg production in the community. This means more affordable, nutritious eggs for households and a reliable additional source of income for the cooperative’s 132 members.

“This initiative is not only about providing livelihood but also about ensuring that communities have access to safe and nutritious food every day,” said Regional Technical Director Rebecca R. Atega of DA Caraga, who urged the cooperative to manage the project well to sustain its long-term benefits.

For MACO Chairperson Heracleo Asares, the project represents both an economic lifeline and a pathway to cooperative growth. “Egg production is profitable. With DA’s technical guidance, we are confident this project will flourish and provide our members with steady income.”

The turnover in Cabadbaran City in the province of Agusan del Norte followed the similar interventions extended to farmers’ groups in Surigao del Norte in August 2025, each receiving the same P2.1 million support package. Together, these initiatives highlight DA Caraga’s commitment to empowering farmers and building resilient, food-secure communities in the Caraga region.
