Port office in Surigao hosts marine biodiversity seminar

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte (PIA) — The Port Management Office (PMO) of Surigao conducted a comprehensive seminar on Philippine biodiversity and marine ecosystem conservation on August 6 as part of the preparatory activities for the upcoming 2025 National Maritime Week celebration in September.
The educational event brought together expert personnel from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) who shared valuable insights on marine conservation and environmental protection in the region.
Three DENR specialists delivered presentations covering critical aspects of marine environmental management such as Julie Ann B. Arreza provided essential information on Philippine biodiversity, focusing specifically on coastal and marine resources in Surigao del Norte, while Queenie B. Taripe discussed the DENR’s Coastal and Marine Ecosystems Management Program, known as “Agos ng Buhay (Flow of Life).”
Johnny G. Pagapong concluded the seminar with a comprehensive presentation on protected areas in Surigao del Norte and related environmental legislation.
Following the educational session, PMO Surigao implemented its Greening Program along the sidewalks of the port. It drew participation from PMO Surigao personnel, employees of GSTI, and other members of the Surigao Port Community, demonstrating strong collaborative engagement in environmental awareness initiatives.
Port Manager Froilan Caturla noted that the environmental initiative featured the installation of more than 50 planter boxes constructed from repurposed and recycled materials, each planted with palm trees to enhance the port’s green infrastructure.
He said, “The greening project was executed through coordinated efforts involving Globalport Surigao Terminals Inc. (GSTI), and stakeholders, showcasing effective multi-sector collaboration in environmental stewardship.
“This dual initiative of education and practical environmental action reflects the port community’s commitment to marine conservation and sustainable development as the Philippines prepares to celebrate the National Maritime Week,” Caturla added.
Through this engagement, the PMO Surigao affirmed its active engagement in marine conservation and environmental protection through a combination of policy implementation, community involvement, and international collaborations. (SDR, PIA Surigao del Norte with a report from PPA-PMO Surigao)
