State U in Tandag creates life-saving mobile app

By Nida Grace P. Barcena

TANDAG CITY(PIA) — The North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU) Tandag City campus develops its own mobile application on vehicular emergency response and rescue operations.

This initiative is designed to assist the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) in responding to emergencies more efficiently and effectively as answer to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s call in his State of the Nation Address (SONA) to harness technology and boost disaster preparedness at the local level.

Now in its second phase, the project gives rescue teams a powerful tool, including:

– Real-time location tracking to pinpoint emergencies quickly;

– Direct communication channels between responders and dispatchers; and

– Streamlined coordination to cut delays in rescue operations.

During a progress presentation on August 8, the NEMSU research team demonstrated the app’s potential to save more lives through faster action.

CDRRMO Chief Reyveen John Geli expressed confidence in the partnership.

“The collaboration between CDRRMO and NEMSU Tandag City campus is a progressive step toward enhancing the city’s emergency response system.”

“This mobile application will be a critical tool for faster, more coordinated, and more efficient rescue operations. We commend NEMSU for its dedication to community-centered innovation,” he said.

NEMSU, as an active member of the Tandag City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, is turning classroom knowledge into concrete, life-saving solutions. This directly supports PBBM’s vision of digitally empowered LGUs and shows how local universities can lead in community resilience.

The mobile app will undergo further development and field testing in the coming months, with deployment targeted for use in real-life emergency scenarios within Tandag City. (NGPB, PIA Surigao del Sur)
