Volunteers to help learners improve reading, comprehension in Caraga

By Jennifer P Gaitano

BUTUAN CITY (PIA) — “When Brigada Eskwela started in 2008 and was institutionalized until this time, more stakeholders have become innovative in contributing to the success of this activity that will greatly benefit the students.”

This was the statement of the Department of Education (DepEd) Butuan City Division’s Eskwela Program Coordinator Domingo Nollora III, when he was asked on the significance and impact of Brigada Eskwela especially in the public schools, during the recent episode of Kapihan sa PIA at the Division’s conference room in Butuan City.

“For some school principals, in partnership with other sectors, had introduced innovative practices such as offering free circumcisions for the youth, free haircuts, and providing snacks for volunteers—initiatives that helped inspire greater community participation and contribution,” said Nollora.

He also emphasized that volunteers have also strengthened their commitment to really help the students improve in their reading stability and comprehension. DepEd also extended its appreciation to all volunteers by giving recognition for their efforts through plaques and certificates being awarded to them for actively taking part in the preparation of classrooms to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment for all learners.

The theme of our Brigada Eskwela is ‘Sama-sama para sa Batang Bumabasa,’ which emphasizes our goal to help learners improve their reading skills,” he said. “Through the implementation of the Brigada Eskwela program, one of our key initiatives is to educate and mobilize nationwide support by encouraging stakeholders and volunteers to help teach reading to our children. This ensures they are better prepared before classes begin,” he added.

Nollora further encouraged all partners and stakeholders to donate school supplies and books that can be used to support children’s reading development and help them start the school year equipped and ready to learn.

“Everyone who wishes to volunteer during Brigada Eskwela is welcome to visit the nearest school in their community. On June 9, 2025, the opening will be implemented simultaneously across all schools,” he said.

“Additionally, June 9 will mark the division-wide kick-off of Brigada Eskwela. We encourage all recipients of our invitation letters — from national and local agencies, private sector partners, and volunteers—to participate in the activity at their respective nearest schools,” he disclosed.

Pursuant to DepEd Order No. 012, series 2025, entitled Multi-Year Implementing Guidelines on the School Calendar of Activities and DepEd Memorandum No.042, series 2025 or 2025 Brigada Eskwela Implementing Guidelines, all public elementary and secondary schools shall implement Brigada Eskwela on June 9-13, 2025.
