COMELEC conducts election-related information literacy to Agusan Sur media

By Kelvin Kennt R. Generalo

PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur (PIA) — The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Agusan del Sur recently conducted a media briefing at the Agusan Valley Convention Center in San Francisco, Agusan del Sur, and discussed preparations for the upcoming May 12, 2025 National and Local Elections (NLE).

The discussion covered the correct usage of election-related terminologies to ensure accurate and clear reporting to the public. COMELEC also clarified the overall election process, emphasizing the importance of the media’s role in delivering fair and factual information.

“We need your help a lot because I perfectly understand the role of the media, and we cannot underestimate the influence and power you carry,” said Atty. Ernie F. Palanan, provincial election officer of COMELEC Agusan del Sur.

“In our coverage, even basic terms are important — for example, the proper name of the school or the polling centers. As much as possible, we should use language and words that connect clearly with our audience,” he added.

Palanan also explained that the room where voters cast their votes is officially called the polling place or precinct. He further clarified that the teachers and staff serving during the election, composed of a chairperson, poll clerk, and third member, are collectively referred to as the Electoral Board.

The briefing also tackled vital reminders regarding election campaigns, compliance with election laws, and regulations to ensure a smooth and lawful voting process.

COMELEC representatives also answered questions from the media and provided clarifications on various election-related concerns.

The activity was seen as an essential step in raising public awareness and ensuring that every eligible citizen can confidently and fairly exercise their right to vote. (KKG, PIA Agusan del Sur)
