Tandag City students train on first aid, basic life support

By Nida Grace P. Barcena

TANDAG CITY, Surigao del Sur (PIA) -- Students under the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning track and student leaders from Saint Theresa College of Tandag participated in an orientation on Standard First Aid and Basic Life Support (BLS) on April 10 at the school's Audio Visual Room in Tandag City.

According to CDRRMO Chief Reyveen John Geli, the city government of Tandag spearheaded the initiative through the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) to equip students with essential emergency response knowledge and life-saving skills.

Geli further said that the orientation began with a comprehensive lecture on the core principles of first aid and BLS, emphasizing the value of timely intervention, composed decision-making, and the presence of mind during emergencies. This was followed by live demonstrations led by trained responders, showcasing the correct application of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), wound care, and other critical techniques.

These interactive demonstrations deepened the students’ understanding and encouraged active participation, preparing them to respond effectively in real-life emergencies at home, in school, or within their communities.

The partnership between Saint Theresa College and the city government of Tandag, reflected a shared commitment to building a generation of responsible and empowered youth capable of contributing to disaster risk reduction and community resilience.

With the growing importance of youth involvement in emergency preparedness, this orientation served as a vital step toward nurturing future leaders who are both informed and action-ready. (NGPB, PIA Surigao del Sur)
