Suirgao Norte gears up for the crafting of a Future-Ready Innovation Agenda

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte -- In a significant move toward strengthening the province's research, development, and innovation (RDI) landscape, key leaders from the provincial government of Surigao del Norte and the Department of Science and Technology - Surigao del Norte (DOST-SDN) recently convened at the PRISM Building, Surigao City.

The meeting set the foundation for the crafting of the 2023-2028 Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) Agenda of the province, and foster collaboration among stakeholders, enhance the province’s research and development capabilities, and ensure that STI-driven programs and projects are impactful and aligned with the provincial development thrusts.

DOST Surigao del Norte Director Mariel Makinano provided an insightful presentation on key national and regional policy frameworks, including PAGTANAW 2050: The Philippine Foresight, the National Innovation Agenda and Strategy Document (NIASD), and the 2023-2028 Philippine and Regional Development Plans.

She also outlined the DOST’s strategic direction and shed light on the challenges facing the Philippine innovation ecosystem, particularly in Caraga, emphasizing the need for a data-driven and priority-aligned approach in crafting Surigao del Norte’s RDI Agenda.

Dir. Makinano also underscored the importance of aligning the province’s RDI roadmap with national priorities and the 10-Point Agenda of Surigao del Norte that will ensure that local research and innovation efforts are not only relevant but also responsive to the socio-economic development needs of the province.

This initiative is closely linked to the province’s plan to establish the Provincial Research, Development, and Innovation Committee (PRDIC) under the Provincial Development Council (PDC). The special committee will serve as a strategic body dedicated to advancing science, technology, and innovation (STI) across various sectors.

As Surigao del Norte charts its course toward an innovation-driven future, the collaborative efforts between the provincial government and DOST signaled a proactive approach in leveraging science and technology for sustainable and inclusive growth.

The development of the 2023-2028 RDI Agenda is a crucial step in positioning the province as a hub for research excellence, technological advancements, and economic transformation. (DOST-SDN/ Surigao del Norte)
