Teachers in Dinagat Islands, Surigao City undergo workshop in climate change

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte -- The Schools Division Offices of Surigao City and Dinagat Province, in collaboration with the Community and Family Services International (CFSI), conducted a training-workshop focused on the development and quality assurance of climate change education modules on January 20-24 at the Almont Beach Resort, Surigao City.

The five-day event equipped the school teachers with practical knowledge and skills for designing, developing, and evaluating high-quality climate change education materials.

The activity reflected DepEd's commitment to integrating climate change education into the curriculum through the Enabling Climate-Resilient WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) in school projects in the Province of Dinagat Islands and Surigao City as part of the UNICEF-supported Typhoon Odette Recovery and Rehabilitation for Climate Resilience (RRTCR) Programme.

During the workshop Dr. Venus M. Alboruto, education program supervisor of the Learning Resource Management Section, expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering support and collaboration that made the event possible.

She also highlighted the importance of the partnership in ensuring the success of the five-day training workshop, which she noted was crucial in equipping educators with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively integrate climate change education into their curricula.

As part of the event, participants were given tasks in groups to develop prototype modules that will eventually be integrated into the formal education system. These modules will be used in schools across, and will form part of a broader push to strengthen climate change education.

In her closing remarks, Lorelie Panganiban, coordinator of the Climate-Resilient WASH in Schools Project (CRWP), expressed her sincere appreciation to the selected participants from both the schools division in Dinagat Islands and Surigao City and thanked them for their active engagement and dedication throughout the event, acknowledging their commitment to strengthening climate-resilient practices within schools.

The successful conclusion of the productive activity served as a promising step toward a future where climate change education is seamlessly integrated into the national curriculum, helping to build a climate-conscious society from the ground up. (DepEd- Surigao City/PIA-Surigao del Norte)
